Books To Believe In Thornton Publishing Refused to return book manuscript files. Parker Colorado
BooksTo Believe In is a book publisher connected with Thornton Publishing and operated by EJ Thornton. While my book, Just A Few Jumper Stories was published through her company, I cannot give a good report of EJ Thornton. The process of going through the book edits was adequate, but not extremely professional.
Once the editing phase was finished there was very little consultation with me, the author. The book became available on Amazon with no notification whatever and there was no prior consultation about the price of the book.
If you order books by volume (for a book signing, for example), they are very expensive compared to some other publishers. Ms Thornton gave me very little guidance about how I should market my book except to say I should start a Facebook page. When I needed assistance, I got responses like, "Well, I have a lot on my plate right now" or stories of interoffice difficulties.
It was also extremely problematic to get information about my sales numbers. Finally, I decided to move to another publisher and notified Ms Thornton I was giving my 30 day notice, as per the contract.
She became irritated and claimed the contract allowed her to keep my manuscript and cover files for those same 30 days saying if I didn't stop asking for the files' return, she would "make SURE I had to wait the full 30 days". She then refused to return the files to me, giving the ingenuous excuse that returning the files was "a process that can't be rushed." Hogwash, even a technological neophyte like me can send a file in less than a minute.
