I have finally finished closing my account with BB&T and opened a new one with a credit union. I should of done this a long time ago and I would have money. BB&T seems to fee you to death. I was with BB&T for a few years. They bought out First Virginia Bank which I had been with for ages and absolutely loved and never once was overdrawn or charged a fee. At first, BB&T was friendly and I didn't have any problems. But, the last 6 to 8 months, it seems like they just want to fee you to death.

First, I have my paycheck direct deposited into my account. It gets sent on Wednesday to the bank. And, the actual pay day is the Friday. Well, BB&T doesn't actually let me have the funds until the following Monday. Their system doesn't run on the weekends. In checking with several other people who bank with other banks in the area, I found that their bank would make the funds available on the Thursday. What BB&T would do is things that I was having coming out of my account they would process them and charge me a fee to cover the amounts before making the money available on the Monday. The new bank I am with makes my funds available on Thursday morning.

Second, if you become overdrawn and don't make a deposit within 7 days, they charge you another fee. But, they don't tell you this up front.

Third, their online banking just plainly sucks. I could never figure out what my true balance was -- was it the current balance or the available balance. And, was the balance after all the items shown were taken out. I tried every which way to figure out how to tell how their system works. I do know they take out items before they make the deposit if its on the same day. Which could cause a fee. Instead of making the deposit first which would avoid fees. The new bank I am with gives me a line per line balance. It shows a balance then item taken out/or deposited with the balance.

Final, is the ATM machine/deposit. It has a sign stating that any deposit made before 8:30am that day would be credited to your account that day. LIE! It happened to me 3 times where I dropped the deposit off on my way to work at 8:15am and the deposit was never taken out of the machine that day. It was done the next morning and credited that day. I called and spoke to the manager about it who insisted I was lying. That the workers said they collected the deposits after 8:30am that morning. Funny, I was on my way to work with my son who was a witness to the time. I have to be to work at 8:30am (I work like 10 minutes from my home).

I have talked with several people who say the same things I do about BB&T and are in the process or have already closed out their account. I would like somebody to look into their banking processes to see if what they are doing is legal. It just makes me wonder why they have to fee people to death. I will never deal with this bank again and I am sorry I didn't change sooner.

Update -- Surprise from BB&T

Well, I wanted to post an update on my situation. I have been with my new bank for almost 2 months now and I haven't had one fee posted on my account. My paycheck is made available on Thurs/AM. They don't put holds anything. So to all of you who told me to keep track of things better -- well, I didn't change one way that I was doing things -- just the bank. So, it made a difference changing banks. I have since filed a complaint with the FDIC. I have not received a response, but I have from BB&T. They removed the $664.00 in overdraft fees I occurred while closing out my account. The only thing they are asking for are the actual amount on the payments that they did process for me. Which is fair -- I am not trying to rip them off like they did with me for so many years. I really wish I had done this sooner. The funny thing is my co-worker told me that now her account with BB&T they are making her paycheck funds available sooner and they didn't put a hold on a check. Just maybe all the people who have gone public with their claims and the ones who contact FDIC, have finally made a difference on how this BB&T is going to operate in the future.

bb&t is one of the biggest rip off banks ever -- i hope to get a class action suit against them --i wonder can you tell what they do with all these fees they collect -- are they supporting something overseas -- mmmmmm -- all i had to do is put in complaints about bb&t and thousands appeared -- i wonder why -- are we are lying/ wrong -- do we all not know how to do finances --don't think so -- funny with my new bank i have had not a bit of problems or fees -- and actually the bank before that (which bb&t bought out) -- i never had a problem with them either --so face the fact mr. jones -- bb&t sucks!

I see that Mr. Jones is the typical BB&T employee trying to act as a customer to make BB&T sound like they do nothing wrong... I have news for you, Mr. Jones... you are a LIAR. I also am having problems with BB&T... I have spoken with their branch manager at LEAST 5 times trying to verify when my funds for my Direct deposit are available... My deposit comes in Tuesday, and after looking at my account, the manager has specifically told me my finds are available Wednesday morning... Checkin on the online banking site does also show my funds as AVAILABLE... however, *ANY* checks that present Wednesday or Thursday, or ANY charges I make on my BB&T check card Wednesday or Thursday, are met with a 34.00 NSF fee, *AND* a 34.00 Overdraft fee... I also have a savings account set up for overdraft and they have *NEVER* transferreed funds from that account to cover *ANY* item... I have tried to talk to the Branch Manager about this, she says the accounts are properly linked and has *no idea* why they are not debiting my overdraft account if something comes in and there truly aren't funds to cover it... She also cannot explain why I am getting charged NSF and OVERDRAFT fee's when she stated to my FACE that the funds from my deposit are available Wednesday... No one will allow you to speak with anyone higher than the manager at your local branch, and basically blow off any complaints... they are refusing to refund *ANY* of their fraudulent charges. In the last month, They have nailed me for almost 2000.00 in false charges on my account... I have filed a complaint with the FDIC, and the lady I spoke with wasn't surprised to my complaint... she says they receive many complaints against BB&T daily for the SAME issues... I hope they nail BB&T so hard with fines they go bankrupt. I have already opened an account with a different bank and will NEVER deal with BB&T ever again.

For the past 10 years I have banked with bb&t. Direct deposit so my checking is free. Why do you expect bb&t to keep up with your accounts and balances if you cant seem to. Spend only what you know you have deposited. If you know the money is not available till monday, why do you make withdraws toward the account before then? My funds are direct deposited in my account on thursday night at 12:00 which is actually friday morning, my funds are available, even for complete withdraw on friday morning. And yes they do charge for overdraft, however this saves you money, if they did not pay on your overdrawn account, you would still pay the bank for nsf charges, plus a fee to whomever you wrote the checks to.
