Budget Rental Trucks ripoff Use of retread tires Poor customer service Denver Colorado
The Letter I Sent To Budget Rental Trucks:

RE: Initial deposit return and partial refund
Why would a respectable company such as yourself put a person driving across the United States behind the wheel of a huge truck with at least three recapped tires? Especially, a female travelling alone. I'm sure you can look up my records and see that I had two blowouts within hours of each other. Do you realize how dangerous of a situation you put me in? I had no idea what was going on. Thank god there were no accidents. The first blowout happened in the afternoon and was handled fairly expeditiously.
However, the second one was a complete nightmare. It was getting dark by this time and to pull over safely, I had to venture off the main highway a bit. Roadside assistance ended up being almost completely useless. They couldn't find my location even though I provided them with the highway and the farm road I was at. They actually even had trouble finding Tyler, Texas. "Steve" promised to call me back when he found a tire. HE NEVER CALLED BACK.After almost 45 minutes in the dark and scared to death, I had to call him back. He said there were no tires for that truck in the immediate area, but promised to keep looking and call me back. HE NEVER CALLED BACK. I called him again after an hour had passed. He said that he still could not find a tire because this kind of thing seemed to be happening alot. Hmmmmm. Maybe recapped tires aren't such a good idea. After being stranded on the side of a rural road for approx. 3 hours a tow truck finally showed up.
It was after 11pm and I was forced to get a room at a questionable motel located next to the repair shop. The repairman informed me that it was a dangerous practice to use recapped tires on this model and he was shocked that you would do so. He said that reputable companies do not do this. I was back on the road at 11 am the next morning , but these mishaps cost me a days worth of drive time. (As a result, the truck was turned in a day late) But I did make customer service aware of this. I'm really hoping that this is not a regular occurance at Budget.
I am a military spouse and we do a lot of moving, as do our friends in several units and squadrons across the country. These moves are generally reimbursed, so we can afford to be choosy. Now, it has been almost 2 months and I have yet to have my $150.00 deposit refunded. Customer service told me to send you my receipts for hotel and food. (these are enclosed) I would like at least a 50% reimbursement of the total cost for this rental fiasco and the danger I was placed in due to faulty maintenance and inept roadside assistance.
I hope that you will seriously consider this matter.
Sincerely,
Brandy
The Response I Received:
I was offered $151.55 for hotel and 1 days rental.
Then 10% off my rental fee. ($190.26) for a grand total of $341.81. I was told I would not get my $150.00 deposit back because the truck was 2 days late. I contend it was 1 day, but I returned it after hours, so they counted an extra day. I asked if they were concerned about the use of retreads and public safety. I was told that maybe a customer didn't feel like waiting for roadside assistance and paid to have the tires changed out of their own pocket. Therefore, Budget was not responsible. I find this ludicrous! A customer would actually pay for a service that Budget is required to provide for free? Then never mention their inconvenience? I am very disappointed with the way this was handled. I would absolutely discourage anyone from renting from Budget. It's dangerous.
