California DMV I paid cash for my registration and now they are saying I didn't pay Los Gatos California
First I always go down to DMV in person to register my car every year because one year they did not send me my tags and I ended up getting a ticket for expired tags. When I tried to clear it up with DMV they made me pay $10 for replacement tags. So they made me pay for them not doing their job. They also have my name spelled wrong on my title and want me to pay them to fix their mistake. I had no idea it was spelled wrong until I paid off my car loan and the dealership sent me my title. On ALL my documentation and DMV registrations untill then my name was spelled correctly.
So anyway, this year right when my registration was due my bank account was compromised so I had to pay them in cash. I didn't want to do it that way and I was getting a bad feeling about it but I figured I would have the reciept in case they ever tried to say I didn't pay. I never throw anything away from DMV. I also never throw anything away from the city when it comes to parking tickets because they have tried a few time in the past to say that I didn't pay something and then I had proof to show them that yes I did pay them. So when I paid cash for my registration the DMV enployee but my cash loosely in one of their drawers. I thought that was odd. Wouldn't they have a metal box that they put the cash in or an envolope?
I remember very specifically putting my new tag on my car because I love yellow and last years tags were yellow and this year they are red. I thought aww good bye yellow. Also my bf's band changed their name to Red Trade and I didn't like the name at first. I jokingly look a picture of my new red tag and sent it to him in a text saying they should change their name to red tag. I have since deleted that text and that picture. I often clear out my phone to save the battery. Since this was over 3 months ago I have no way to retireive that picture prooving I paid my registration and had current tags on my car. In the last few weeks I have gone to my car and it was unlocked. I thought that was very odd because I am very dilligent about locking my car. I lock it about 2 or 3 times everytime just to double check I locked it. It didn't seem like anything was missing at the time so I didn't worry about it even though it didn't sit well with me. Well it turns out that my current registration is not in the glove compartment were I always keep it. I have looked through everything in my room and car and I can't even find the original notice from DMV fo rthis year. That means that someone took both my reciept and my notice. I only realised these were missing when I just got a notice in the mail from DMV saying I didn't pay my registration.
So now what do I do? My proof has been stolen and I just noticed my current tag also has been stolen off my car. I don't have the money or time right now to go down to DMV and pay them again. So basically they are trying to get me to pay more than double becuase I'll be paying then twice plus so called late fees. Also, why would they wait over 3 months to send me a notice of late registration? If I hadn't paid it they would have sent me a notice right away.
It seems the only way to clear this up is to have an authority, like the FEDs, to go in there and check their system to see when information was changed on my account.

I am an employee however I am NOT responding on behalf of DMV. Neither DMV or the State can be held responsible for my comments.
1) About the spelling of your name on the title. Typos are a part of life. Who knows where the typo originated. They are often made on the purchase agreement at the dealership. The error may have been a typo by the person that keyed the application at DMV. If error is obviously a typo there isn't any fees charged to correct. If your name was Johnson when you about the car and you got married during the loan period so your name is now Peters then you would have to pay for that change. So if it is an obvious typo then take it to DMV and tell them you want it corrected. If they tell you there is a fee to correct it ask to speak to a manager. I'm thinking that if you asked them to correct it when the loan co was being removed then that was the reason for the fee.
2) If you can describe the person that processed your tags then go back to that office and tell them you want them to check the employee's discrepancy log. Each and every discrepancy is logged. The employee, their manager and the office manager has to initial it. If you can remember the rest of the details you shouldn't have any problem remembering the employee. If you were issued a tag and they tell you that they didn't there should be an inventory discrepancy log indicating a missing tag also.
3) Finally the registration penalties should be 60% of the registration fees.

I know my story sounds strange but it is 100% the truth. This isn't the first time I have had to deal with corrupt local government. They do what they know they can get away with. Like a few years ago they never sent me my tags and then made me pay $10 to replace the tag they never sent. That is why I always pay in person now. They spelled my name wrong on my title and then they wanted me to pay them for their mistake. When I lived in Oakland they refused to issue residents parking permits and then they kept changing the rules about how you move your car ever two hours and their written law was so vague they interprepted it how ever they wanted. In one year I ended up paying $1,500 in parking tickets to park on my street. At the time I had not had a vacation in 3 years and had finally saved enough money to go to my friends wedding which I was then unable to go to becuase I had to pay for the parking ticktets I was fighting. I could go on about more things our local cities have done to me and so many others. I'm not the only one. I've heard countless stories of how our local government has ripped of it's citizens.
And having too many pictures on my phone dose run the battery down. I can't have my phone turned off when I need to use it. Duh! You know I am kicking myself for deletin gthat picture. I wish I had kept it. There are also devices now that unlock any car that has electronic locks. I had a really bad feeling about paying cash to DMV and no look. I'm on a limited income and right now I don't have time to be dealing with this. For the next month I have more work to get done than I have time. I really don't even have time to be writing this. I have to get back to my homework.

So if we take the condensed version of this "hard luck" story...
You paid cash for your registration 3 months ago, because your bank account was compromised right as you had to pay your registration and cash was all you had.
Now, in the 3 months since...
You have had your car broken into and all they took was the registration.
You had proof of putting your new sticker on because you took a picture...that you deleted
Before you deleted it you sent it to your bf...who also must have deleted it.
You then had the sticker stolen off of your plate
With this let's just say "interesting" story, I don't think the FEDS will swoop down on the DMV to find your missing registration. If i didn't know any better, I would not be shocked if this turned out to be some strange plug for your boy friends band.
By the way just for future reference, if you want to save your battery..turn off your phone. Deleting text and pictures will do nothing for your battery power.
