Let me share with you a story about working for Canadian Property Stars.

My son (15) wanted to buy himself a new bike so when one late winter day of 2013 the doorbell rang offering aeration services for when the snow thaws, my son asked if he could work for them this year.

Long story short....he went through the brain washing of being able to make thousands of dollars and he started his first day 2 weeks later (still snow on the ground).

After the first day he was actually quite excited as it was a sunny day and he managed to do 9 houses that day. He made $100 from commission + $50 for being in the top 3 performers that day +$30 in tips. He worked in total 15 hours.

One week later he went back but this time the weather was bad with snow flurries. He managed to sell in total 5 houses and made $75 for again 15 hours of work. He also got a cold, which put him to bed for over a week.

He went for the third time on Friday (PA day at school) 3 weeks later. Again, he worked 15 hours. He managed to sell 8 houses that day. He also got 2 tips (one $20 and one $50). On that day he also made one sale where the owner said
that he will contact Canadian Property Stars and pay via credit card as he doesn't have cash on him.

My son diligently filled out the sales forms with information that one customer will pay via credit card. When it came to paying out the commission, my son was told that he needs to give Canadian Property Stars his $50 tip for that day to
cover the home that the owner said that he will pay via credit card or he won't get his entire commission for that day.

I picked up my son that night and couldn't do much to clarify the issue with Canadian Property Stars as it was already 11 PM but the next day.......

I gave them a call asking them to give back my son his $50 tip. The blunt answer was NO. That the company has rules "the same as McDonalds, Burger King and other multi-million dollar organizations". Needless to say the discussion
became quite heated ending in me getting into my car with my son and driving to Mississauga to their office.

The office isn't that easy to get to. It's behind a locked fence, opened via remote control. We were actually lucky because there were 3 people waiting on the other side of the fence to be let out after applying for a job. The fence eventually opened after waiting 10 minutes for the 3 people to be let out and we walked the 150 m to the office where we met with the female employee that I had my heated discussion over the phone an hour earlier.

We were a bit better prepared for the conversation than over the phone as we quickly went through the "rules" of Canadian Property Stars so this time instead of the lady telling me that there are rules, which allow them to take tips from their employees to cover for customers withholding payment I said show me those rules, knowing that there is nothing of the sort in their "rule book".

Needless to say she couldn't find anything in the "rule book" so she changed her tactic saying that my son was offered an opportunity the evening before to give the tip ($50) in exchange for a $15 commission and apparently he willingly chose to give up $50 for a $15 commission.

My son got really angry when he heard that he was "offered" a choice and bluntly said that she is a liar and a crook.

To my naive question as to why would anyone want to give up $50 for $15 the lady said that it is a common practice not to get fired and that they fire people left and right and that he (my son) should be grateful that they chose not to fire him...During the entire conversation the threat of being fired came up at least 3 times.

After about 10 minutes of ping pong the lady finally said to give her the $15 commission and she would give my son the $50 tip and we part our ways to which we said fine ... but ... when and if the get the payment from the credit card from the customer then she needs to call us and give my son his $15 commission.

The answer again was "NO", and that she would not call my son when the customer paid as he no longer works for them and therefore he is not entitled to anything further.

10 minutes later, after trying to explain to the lady the silliness of her approach and that my son earned the money and once they are paid he is entitled to his commission she eventually caved in and said...fine...take your $50 and just leave....

We started on our 150 m walk back to the gate....yup...they wouldn't open the gate for us so my son ran back to the office and came back saying that it is closed and that we would need to climb over the gate....

I didn't climb over the gate but I walked back to the office and started pounding on the door with my fist....

The lady came out and I just said that her behaviour was completely childish and told her to open the gate for us. I started walking towards the gate and it started to open but as I was about half way it started to close again so by the time I had walked up to it, the gate was long closed back.

I started walking back the 150m to the office and this time a man came out when I was half way and opened the gate but this time I didn't go towards the gate but I came back to the new man and asked him if they were having fun because I am not. His reply was that the gate is automatic and that I should have walked faster and that he is here now to make sure that I leave.

He also threatened me by telling me that I am trespassing on private property when I told him that I will not leave until I receive an apology from the lady for her behaviour to which he said that that won't happen. After another 10 minutes of explaining to this new person that I will make sure that I spread the word of what happened that evening and the next day to my son and myself the lady eventually came out and apologised to us. We left.

The issue that I have is that we are capable of standing up for our rights and Canadian Property Stars didn't expect that. They thrive on people that either do not have an education, are new to the workforce and do not understand their rights
or do not speak fluent English to steel money from them. This is a scam and Canadian Property Stars I encourage you to sew me so that we can prove our rights in front of a court of law. You are thieves and scammers.

Consistent Billing Practices

Hello Anonymous, and thank you for taking the time to detail your recent experience with our Mississauga office.

It sounds like your son is a pretty good salesman, and a nice guy, too, given all the tips!

After 3 days of contracting work for Canadian Property Stars your son should have known that we do not bill (invoice for later payment) new customers at their doors. We only extend this option to returning customers over the phone in our pre-season. This is covered in all contractor training, and indicated in company printed materials.

We have many young workers work with us annually, and we apply all billing procedures consistently across our 12 Canadian locations.

We did, however, break protocol in giving your son the disputed tip monies.

You called our young staff member and used profane language when arguing about your son's failure to follow the same rules that all of the other workers follow. Then you came onto our property to further threaten our staff in person.

We encourage our staff to diffuse situations to ensure their safety, and so that they can return to their own work. They too are the sons and daughters of concerned parents, and do not deserve your misplaced hostility.

Our Mississauga location has a gate that the owner of the property installed long before we were tenants. We share the property with other tenants.
