Mr Mello runs a backyard breeding operation out of his mother's home in New Bedford, MA. Dogs are advertised to be pure-bred Portuguese Pointers and are not. After a year or so of ownership, I did some research and found that the litter I saw was actually 1/4 English Poiner and 3/4 Portuguese Pointer. I purchased my dog from him and by the age of 3, he was having hip dysplasia symptoms which were inherited from his parents. Mr. Mello runs a shoddy operation and the dogs he has are not only sick but are fearful and not socialized at all.  He didn't let us see the mother of the dogs or the basement where the dogs were kept.

glad to see someone has had a good experience. Mine was awful.

My puppy from this breeder was not pure bred (for the price we paid I would expect to get  what I paid for) and I looked into the mother and father from the ukc ppw that was given to us at the time of purchase and the puppy that was sold  to us was NOT purebred.

He also developed serious genetic hip dysplasia at the very young age of 3 and is still recovering from his major (and very expensive) surgery.

The puppy we purchased was sick with parasites, had never been on a leash and was terrified of everything when we got him home. After years of working with him, my dog is my best friend  and I wouldn't trade him but I feel it is important for others to consider my experience

One of the puppies from his litter was a beautiful chocolate brown female. If you look up Portuguese pointers, there's no way two pure bred PPs produce a chocolate brown puppy.

Maybe Rodney has changed his ways since that litter 4 years ago but I would never return to him.

After having a bad experience with a different breeder in Stonington, CT, we were lucky enough to find Rodney Mello. He communicated well with us, throughout his dogs pregnancy, and sent us updates on all the puppies after they were born. We chose a female, who is an absolutely beautiful example of what the breed is all about. She is healthy, intelligent and loving. She gets along very well with our 3 children - a girl, 16 and twin boys, 10. We picked her up at 10 weeks, and Rodney has stayed in touch with us to check on her progress and to make sure we are all happy. We are!

If we could have taken another puppy, we would have. The dogs are outstanding. I would feel confidant recommending Rodney and his top-quality Portuguese Pointers to anyone I know. We couldn't be happier with him, or our new family member.

We saw both mother and father at the house. I can't imagine what "research" this person did. My dog is UKC registered as a pure bred dog - not that it matters to me - we bought her as a pet, not as a show or hunting dog. She will be going to the vet for the third time tomorrow, and everything has been 100% fine. She is social, and is taking well to training. She is afraid of nothing. We got her right before 4th of July and brought her to a fireworks display on the 4th. She slept through the entire 30 minute show in my wife's lap. I would think that would translate well to hunting, no?

I'm afraid that this complaintant seems ingenuine. I would be interested to hear what the breeders reaction was when she contacted him to complain, as he has been nothing but helpful to us.
