I'm so grateful that this web site and all these other complaints exist. I defaulted on a loan over 10 years ago, and the first time Camco called, which was about five months ago, they offered me a "settlement" for about one-half of the original amount. I've checked my credit report in the last year, and since the original loan is no longer on them, I suspected this might be a scam.

And it is. I contacted an attorney here in Michigan who said that he actually has a lawsuit pending against them. What they are doing is a scam, and their harrassment is also a major part of the lawsuit.

If they call you and will not stop, you can do the following:

--send them a certified letter, informing them they are to stop contacting you;

--if you have an answering machine, tell your Camco rep that you are recording their call and then do so, saving the tape;

--get a complaint form from the Illinois Attorney General's Office, the Department of Consumer Protection, (312) 814-3000;

--contact your state's Attorney General's office, the Department of Consumer Protection (I found the number for mine on the web);

--contact the Federal Trade Commission and file a report,877-382-4357;

--if Camco does not stop contacting you, contact the Federal Communications Commission; contact information can be found on the web.

Most importantly, it's easy to fall into their trap of making you feel bad because maybe, like me, you screwed up a while back, and if you're like me, you feel bad about it. At the same time, no one deserves to be treated this way. If you are recording them, let them spew out all their ugly stuff and read a magazine or watch TV while they're doing it. Say "uh huh" every once in a while. They have no legal basis for doing this to any of us, and they cannot do one thing to your credit report. The statute of limitations is up.
