Capitale One Late Charges after account closed! - Internet
I closed this account in March, after much wrangling. They wouldn't let me cancel the account and kept arguing. Finally, I paid off whatever outstanding balance I had and thought the matter was closed. At that point, I was no longer able to log into the website to check my balance.
4 months go by and one day I get a letter saying I'm late with payments and if I'm having problems paying the balance, I should contact them. What? I go online and magically I'm able to log into the account, which now shows that I've been hit with $59 late fee for the last 4 months. I got no letters from them during that time. Then the phone calls start, every hour, every day.
I told the person that this is unethical. They'd kept silent and charged me for 3 months. If they'd sent me a letter on the first month, I wld've resolved it there and then. Now the balance had $50 of fraudulent charges and over $100 in capital one charges. What nonsense! What's the point of cancelling a card, if they are going to accept charges on it, fradulent charges to boot! They've managed to ruin my credit score, which until that point was 730. God knows where its at know. I'm disputing this but dont know what other means I have. I dont want to pay them because that only encourages them to continue their predatory practices on other people. I'm shocked that they can get away with this for so long, gauging from other reports on this website from ppl who've had similar experiences.

My daughter had the same problem. I would suggest sending a complaint letter to the legal department.Advise them that they are in violation of the fair credit reporting act.
