I needed a third car after my daughter started driving. I have had very good experiences with both new and used VWs (purchased from the VW dealer). I wanted a VW GTI but my dealer did not have a used one in my price range. I found one on CarMax.com (2007 with DSG) and had it transferred to Knoxville. I was out of town when it arrived in Knoxville so my salesman took it home to hold it past the normally allowed number of days. I looked it over, drove it, and took it home. CarMax recommends taking the car to a factory dealer to make sure all of the recalls are up to date. My VW dealer found than none of the recalls had been done and it appeared that not much maintenance had been performed over the life of the car. I had everything done that the dealer recommended to the tune of over $900. $150 of that was a leaking valve cover gasket which I asked CarMax to cover. Instead, CarMax split the bill and paid me over $450.00. The turbo four cylinder engines in the VWs require regular, expert maintenance to survive, and I was worried that I might have problems with this car in the long run. In reality the problems started immediately in the form of very hard starting, rough running, low gas mileage, and high oil consumption. After 5 months, 5k miles, and several attempt to repair the car, CarMax bought it back for the full purchase price. I bought a 2011 Mercedes C300 (from CarMax Knoxville) and could not be happier with the extraordinary customer service I received.
