A "Michael Clark" from an "attorney's office" called to inform me that I would be arrested for non-payment of a loan made from Cash Advance USA. I spoke to this person after they had repeatedly dialed my cell and my office, and repeatedly not responded when I picked up the phone.
Once he did respond, he stated that this is a serious matter that needed my immediate attention, and requested my attorney's fax number so that he could send information on this.
When I asked what this is regarding, I was told repeated attempts to collect a loan made my Cash Advance USA or one of their 86 affiliates online.
I told him that I had not received any notice regarding this, and that to the best of my knowledge had not received any loan from this entity, and this is the first contact of any sort on this matter. He stated that tomorrow morning I should be expecting a visit from the sherrif's or police department to take me into custody and taken to court to resolve this, and that I should have a check prepared to do this.
Again, I asked for more information and he said that is all he could discuss, and to expect the authorities in the morning and hung up the phone. Throughout the call I could hear what sounded like a telemarketing workplace with lots of people speaking in the background; also this call sounded like I had dialed an "outsourced" or "offshore" company as it was difficult to understand what "Michael Clark" was telling me.
I did a little research and found this "ripoff report" site online with similar occurrences.
I called the number back to try to get more information from "attorney" "Michelle ?" who answered the phone. She started what I could guess was reading a prepared paragraph and told "do not interrupt" her until she was finished telling me the information she had to relay. I was given similar information and told that there were many attempts to collect this "debt" from my bank and requests were returned. I was told that I was being sought due to wire fraud, internet scheme, theft by deception and another illegal action.
Again I stated that I had no debt with this company and that this sounded like a scam - and was abruptly told to expect someone from the sherrif's department in the morning and promptly hung up on.
I tried to call back and reached the same woman - she said "if you think this is a scam, expect a visit from the authorities" and "do not call here again. Stop calling me." - and hung up the phone on me again.
