After being convinced by my girlfriend to open a Charter One account so it's easier to transfer money between our accounts, I was charged ridiculous overdraft fees by the bank.   I am not too familiar with the banking processes and my banker was aware of this.   I signed a paper that stated I cannot overdraft at all and any transactions I do that are past my balance, wll get declined.

First off, after opening the account, I was going through troubles with their website trying to create a log-in.  They wanted my PIN number to create a user name but that didn't come in the mail until about a few days after I received my card.   Even after that, it was asking for a password, which obviously i wouldn't have since I am Enrolling into Online Banking.

I didn't think much of it and continued to use my card.  I checked opened it originally with $50.   I continued to use my card because my banker said I had to use it at least 6 times and even called me to remind me that I had to use it 6 times by that day that he called otherwise, the account would be closed.   I checked my balance and it was down to $2.64. I decided to use redbox for $1.08 movies (twice) so I figured I'd have some few cents left.

I recently just spoke to customer service to sign online.  When I checked my account, I was -$79 even after a $15 transfer.   (I figured a $15 dollar transfer would bring me to $15.some few cents left from the last time I checked my account).

I called them to inform them that I was never notified that I had an overdraft ($29 for the first and $37 after) then they continue charging $6.99 a day.  So far I am overdrawn $79 and even after speaking to customer service, I was told that they apologize for the inconvenience but the paper that I signed that I cant overdraft isn't effective until the 15th ( I was never told by the banker this).  I told her I was never informed of the overdraft, all she did was make me verify my address.  I told her the overdraft incurred on the 8th of July.  It is now the 18th.  I have never received such a letter. they said that I had to claim a complaint with the post office because they sent it out.  I asked for them to close my account.  They said they couldn't do so unless the balance was back to 0.  I refuse to pay almost $100 in overdraft for a $2.00 overdraft, in which was not my fault because they are late at posting charges on their phone 800 number automated banking.  This means that fees will incur because I cannot close my account until it is at 0 balance.

This is cheating a consumer and this is definitely not citizens banking.   I am never banking with charter one again and my girlfriend will close her account too because they have done this numerous times in the past to her also.  This was one of my first banking experiences and they just gave me a bad taste in the mouth for banking.  I will definitely not recommend Charter One Bank to anybody.
