I lived in a beautifully restored Victorian mansion that had been converted into (9) apartments, address: 262 Adams Street, Abington, MA.

On Saturday December 27, 2003, I spent the day at home, going through/sorting my Christmas presents, working around the house, relaxing, etc.. It was a beautiful bright winter day, just an all around great day. Life was good.

I fell asleep on the couch watching a movie at about 11:00 p.m.. At 1:19 a.m I awoke to the sounds of someone screaming, half-asleep, half-aggravated, I got up, that's when I could see and smell the black smoke. Sort of in a daze, I walked out my front door into the hallway, there were people screaming, there was thick black smoke. I walked out the front door to the outside, I had no shoes or socks, just a t shirt& pajama bottoms. It was about 15 degrees. I started to go back to get a pair of shoes and a jacket, but it was too late, there was too much smoke. I heard people screaming that Doris, the 90 year old woman that lived on the third floor, was trapped. It was horrific as we watched her bang on window, trying to break it to get some air. A couple of tenants tried to go back in to rescue her, but the smoke was too thick. Eventually Doris was rescued by the Abington FD, and brought out her window via ladder. She was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, she survived, but now lives in a state run nursing home. For several hours we watched as our house burned, I kept thinking that we would be able to go back in. A gas main ruptured and basically that was it. The house was bulldozed the next morning at about 9:00 a.m.

Our neighbors were outstanding, giving jackets, shoes, gloves etc.. Throughout the night we heard bits and pieces regarding the cause of the fire from all different sources. We knew it happened in Cheryl McCabe's apartment, knowing her we suspected as much. Ms. McCabe fled the scene, while the rest of us were left to watch all of our belongings be destroyed.

Official cause of fire, per The Abington Fire Department, and Massachusetts State Fire Marshall: Careless disposal of a cigarette by an individual probbably impaired by drugs and alcohol. Ms. McCabe had been drinking all day watching the Patriots game, with several guests. Ms. McCabe was a known heavy drinker and a smoker, not a good combination. I understand accidents can happen, but Ms. McCabe acted in a reckless manner, with no regard.

No charges were ever filed against Cheryl McCabe. Several tenants and I considered suing Ms. McCabe, but, you can not get blood from a stone. Ms. McCabe has never offered any sort of apoligy for ruining so many people's lives. In terms of money losses, it was a big hit, but you can always work more, save money, and re purchase. It really is the little things that you miss the pictures, favorite pair of jeans etc. I know that I am very lucky that I got out unharmed, I am grateful for that, but still to lose everything that you have amassed your entire life is devastating.

Ms. McCabe is in her early 50s, bleached blond hair, about 5'8, she drives a late model silver 2 door foreign car. She moved into an apartment at 687 Washington Street in South Easton, MA, she lied to her current landlord, telling her that her former home was destroyed in an electrical fire. Beware if this woman moves into your home or becomes a neighbor of yours, she still drinks heavily and still smokes.
