On 3/1/3, my debit card number was used for an unauthorized website transaction. I found out when two checks bounced and I checked my account and didn't recognize the $79.95 purchase. 2 weeks ago, I called and CIC told me the name of the person that used my card online. They told me they'd refund my money once I faxed a copy of the police report to them. I'm still waiting.
The Police are now conducting a fraud investigation to discover why my card was used for a credit report for a Ms. Sandy L. Brickhouse of Pennsylvania. I do not know this woman, and I did not authorize the use of my card.
Thing is, the card never left my wallet. The only other places I've used this card in the last 4 months is at my local Acme Market and at Photoworks (formerly Seattle Filmworks). My card number is on file with Photoworks and I do all my film development with them through the mail. My concern is that someone there or at Acme wrote down my number in order to get a report either for themselves or for Sandy.
I've tried to contact Sandy myself, but there is no listing for her in my local phone book, nor on Google.com, so my next step is to discuss this with Acme and Photoworks, to see if they know of this woman.
I'm a little worried that she, too, might perhaps be a victim. Who knows? Someone may have used her soc. sec # to get an online report & steal her identity.
I hope my story helps you in your case.
