Many banks charged a fee if you use a non-bank ATM for any transaction, to include a balance inquiry. This is on top of whatever fee the bank that owns the ATM might charge. If there are any ATMs from your bank available, it makes sense to use them and not be charged any fee at all.

I received a call the same night from the bank manager Olga. She was wonderful!! She applyed the $72 back to my account. Her exact words were " I understand that you are new to the bank and that you didn't know about the charges. I may work here, but Im still human." And she refunded my account!!! Dave Buke on the other hand, sucks as a manager and a person!!

Non-Citizen's ATMs/Withdrawls, Transfers, Balance Inquiries, Mini-Statements...$2.00. Further down the page... Sustained Overdraft Fee....$35.00. You should give your account terms and conditions a read sometime, then you'd know.
