The law states that cancellations must be post marked within 72 hours and it sounds like you did this, however, if you used any of the services or if it was, in fact, not valid, then the request can legally be denied and they do not have to cancel your package or payments.
I found this out the hard way, and was refused cancellation as well, however, I am a responsible adult and acknowledged that my cancellation was not valid and have upheld my end of the contract. Since then, I have received wonderful customer service, the best deals and even a free tan or two!
Know what you are signing, be responsible and dont blame others for your mistakes!
