You have no one to blame but youself. I know this is harsh, but you are the one that is responsible for reconciling your bank statements each and every month. You had an ongoing monthly debit from a CRA for YEARS and you never noticed!
You signed up for credit monitoring when the website offered a credit report. Yes, it is slimy of the CRA to have duped you into getting monitoring. But you should have noticed it the following month when an additional debit hit your account. The fact that you missed an extra debit on your bank statements for 42 months in a row speaks volumes about how careless you are with your responsibilties and your finances.
There is no excuse now for not knowing the status of your account with the internet and bank access 24 hrs/day. If you don't know how to reconcile your statements, google it. In fact, the less money you have, the more you need to be on top of your finances. You can not afford to ignore your bank records.
By the way, once you take control of your own finances (and responsibility) you will feel empowered. Don't let anyone just access your bank account - it is a sure way to go broke and stay there.
