I have an iBook G3 that is about ten months old. It didn't come with an Airport card. Recently I purchased a DWL-122 adapter so I could have a wireless connection to our Airport base station, as well as a local internet cafe.

I have had nothing but problems with the adapter since purchasing it. What will happen is that the adapter will suddenly lose the ability to transmit or receive packets from the access point, even though the D-Link software says it's still connected to the wireless network in question. You can try to renew the DHCP address, but that does not work. The only way I've been able to get back on the network is to unplug and then plug back in the adapter. About half the time that works. The other half of the time it totally crashes my system and forces me to reboot my system.

I have tried everything, from downloading the very latest drivers from their web sites, to downloading and installing the latest version of OS X (10.3.5) in the hopes that would work. In an email, D-Link suggested that I make sure that nothing else was running when installing the drivers, and to make sure I had a good signal connection. It is not a problem with the number of devices either, because there's just two wireless devices right now in our network. I have done everything they have suggested.

This adapter was marketed as being compatible with OS X. But it seems that even though there are drivers it's only barely compatible with Macs. Before anyone says it's something with the actual computer, I have never had problems of this sort before buying this D-Link adapter. Other users have had problems similar to what I have had. If I had known the adapter would be such a problem, I never would have purchased it. I think D-Link needs to get it in gear and fix the problem with the adapter and/or the software drivers.

Try the Belkin FSD6050

#2Consumer Suggestion

Fri, October 08, 2004

Since submitting this inital report on the DWL-122, I gave up on the DWL-122. I purchased a Belkin FSD6050 USB network adapter. Even though it's advertised as PC compatible only, there are drivers for the Mac available through the Belkin web site. It's a larger and bulkier model than the DWL-122. But so far the Belkin adapter has worked 100% better on my laptop. I have not had any sort of problems connecting to my network or the internet, and so far it hasn't crashed my system either. I'd recommend the Belkin over the D-Link for Mac users who would need to connect over a USB device. It's a better product than the D-Link.
