While traveling toward Mount Rushmore and after having driven for two hours through countryside that sported little civilization, we stopped at the first hotel we saw in Torrington, Wyoming--a Day's Inn. No one was at the front desk, so we had to go looking for someone to check us in. By this time it was 7 :30 P.M., so we agreed to pay the $84 per room, even though it was the most expensive place we had stayed during our 2-week vacation. After leaving the front of the hotel and driving to where our rooms were located, I noticed 3 cracked windows and weeds as high as my knees between the sidewalk and the building. When we entered the building, our noses were assaulted by the smell of a sewer. Our non-smoking room, labeled as such on the door, smelled like a chimney, which was a problem since my child has asthma. When I walked into the bathroom in our room, the first thing I saw was that mold had almost completely covered the ceiling and was creeping down the walls. Walking back into the bedroom, I noticed that the Day's Inn wastebasket was cracked badly and that there were electric wires, probably live, hanging from the ceiling. After checking my parents' room, I discovered that the wires should have been attached to the smoke alarm. I reported the mold to the young woman at the desk, and she offered me another room, and wrote my complaint in a spiral notebook. The 2nd room was no better. We got on the phone and tried to find another place in Torrington, but everybody else was booked, so we were forced to spend 12 terrible hours there.
