I worked in the admissions office for DeVry University for over 7 years.  During this time, we were constantly pushed to enroll students into one of the programs.  We were told that if we did not have enough student in our classes, we would be written up, or fired.  DeVry even found out ways to pay for top dollars to admission reps, eventhough title 4 funding prohibits the paying of commissions.  We were told many times to just get the students in the seats.  To make our budget or else.

They only have like a 40% completion rate.  The 60% that do not complete, end up owing thousands of dollars, and have no degree, some go into default and then can not get back into school because of this.  While I believe once upon a time, Devry was in it to really help students, that has gone away by basic corporate greed.

Your comments explains why anyone who is in DeVry's lead base get's inundated with phone calls up to 8 times per day and sometimes, 2-3 in an hour. Not to mention calls on our cell phones, pages, text messages and email blasts.

This also explains the used car salesman approach when they get us on the phone or if we show up in person. I was turned off by this approach and felt that it was very unprofessional, certaintly not like real schools with real admission advisors that I spoke with.

At first I thought it was just me. Then I talked to several others who expressed the same concern and now I have read your excellent post spilling the beans on DeVry from someone who has been on in the inside.

Another thing that turns me off about DeVry is their "tag team" approach. When one rep can't "close" you, he brings in another, his buddy who tries to "close" you.  I went i n to DeVry looking for information on going to school. When I left, I felt like I  was being hussled and trying to buy a car!

The Admissions Advisors that call you on the phone are nothing but glorified telemarketers. Very unprofessional. One guy ever told me thathis last job was selling vacation packages for a telemarketing firm. Another said that he used to work for Foortocker! LOL! Vacation packages and low paid sales clerks from Footlocker? These are the geniuses that potential DeVry sudents are speaking with and counting on for expert career advice? LOL!!!!!

Thanks for shedding light on the completion rate. Only 40%? So 60% of the students who enroll get screwed and are stuck with a huge student loan debt? And high pressure on DeVry reps to make sales too? I am sure that you are aware that University Of Phoenix is still under investigation by the SEC for the manner in which they compensate their sales people aka Admissions Advisors. Apparently all of the for profit schools operate the same way.

So once again thank you for your honesty and candor.

Thinking of enrolling with DeVry???

CAVEAT EMPTOR!!!!!!!
