Yesterday Jan 29, 2005 I had the Direct4u installer (Ray Schnider) in my home to install the special they advertised on tv. I was having four rooms installed with Directv. When I called the service they informed me that installation was free and I did not have to pay for anything but the installer informed me that the wires were suppost to be ran for him. No one had informed me of that fact. So of course that would be extra. I told him just to leave the stuff and my husband would put it it.

Then the installer told me that I had a choice of two dishes. The dishes matched up to different local channels. I told him I didn't care. He then informed me that if I take the round dish that it would be eaiser for my husband to hook up the channels and I would get philly local channels instead of wilksbury. I said ok.

He hooked up the dish and then told me if I wanted a directv tivo that he could give me a good price of 70.00 but he couldn't put it on the paper work for that price. I said sure... thinking I was getting a bargin.

After all was said and done he told me to activate the boxes when he left. As soon as I tried to I found that the local channels did not work. They transfered me to Tech Support and they informed me that I have the wrong dish. Yelp the dish I have will not work in my zip code.

I called direct4u and they told me to call back monday. Since this is saturday I told they I wanted to speak with a supervisor. After being on hold for a while the girl came back and told me that the sup will call be tonight. Humm right. Never called.

I called directv an hour later and they were real nice and told me that they will make sure I get the right dish if direct4u doesn't help.

I then called back to direct4u and was on hold for 15 minutes to have a recording tell me that they were closed and I would have to call back monday. LOL

Don't worry I will call and call until I get this put right. I will be updating this as I go threw the problems with Direct4U!

I suggest not going with any other company to install your directv other than Directv! At least right now I do. I don't know how I will feel in a week or two.

Understanding Free Standard Install

#2Consumer Suggestion

Tue, October 25, 2005

A Free Install is not always so. A free standard install is up to four receivers connected via the nearest wall, from the dish, up to 125 feet from the dish, via the exterior of the home. A bushing and proper seals are used to make sure that weather does not get into the holes where the cables are installed. A free standard install does not include wall fishing, wall plates, attic crawls, pole mounts, crawl spaces, and other hazzards. It does not include installing phone lines, although some HSPs try to force their installers to do this. Both Dish and DirecTV are making changes to their standard installation practices, however, the quality of installs has steadily declined because the professional people who do installs are being systematically replaced by what we call hacks, people who don't install dishes to code, and who don't take pride in their work. At the same time, the industry is forcing installers to pay for their supplies, cable, fittings, bushings, ground blocks, ground wire, poles, copper ground rods, and so on. As they reduce the amount of money that they pay to high quality installers, the installers are moving out of the industry. If installing and alligning a dish was something that anyone could do, then you or the next person could do it. The bottom line is that the industry is working to destroy the integrity of the installation professionals who are interested in doing a quality job for a reasonable price, but if you think I'm going to spend five hours in your home running wall fishes, attic fishes, wall plates, ground blocks, ground wires and rods, teach you to use your system, after trenching 50 feet for free and setting a pole in the ground in concrete with a PVC cable race, all for 50 bucks, you can forget it. The average four room install includes about 250 feet of cable, four ground blocks, 18 fittings, four lag bolts, four external bushings, about four ounces of caulking and weather bushings. They take about two hours to complete, and with fuel on average cost an installer 23.00 to complete. That leaves 27.00 of the basic fee, plus any additional funds for the 3 other receivers. Then the installation company charges the installer back if someone says something even if it's not true. You 9-5 people don't have to fight, beg, and pray you're not getting the shaft from an HSP, but you want your dish. I do quality work. Any time any of you want to see proof of that let me know and I'll direct you to many photos of my work, many customer testimonials, and many many references. When a company wants to cut my pay by 20% and increase my work load by 70% all the while taking the ability for me to earn any extra funds, I feel that company is not looking out for me. I'm sorry that there are so many bad installers out there, but until the providers, Dish Network and DirecTV get it into their heads that what I do is valuable, you customers will continue to get shoddy service from people who could care less what you think. If I did your install it was right, it was to code and you were informed of any possible additional charges, but if the customer service rep you spoke to did not tell you what a standard install was, that's not my fault. ASK. An informed consumer makes wise choices.

installer ripped you off

#3Consumer Suggestion

Mon, October 24, 2005

I am an installer for DTV and I live in Hazleton Pa. Let me start out by telling you that you got ripped off by the installer not direct 4 u. Almost everything he told you is not true. Installation is free whether you have the lines run or not, you never have a choice on what dish you get, we are in the wilkes barre market and none other, that is determined by zip code. If you have any questions or are in need of service please call me. I have relatives in Coaldale and they will vouch for me.

watch those installers, they have been known to steal the access cards to go and put in their friends receivers

Just want to let you know and other directv customers out there, that being a directv employee, I see this quite a bit. The third party installers get so much to actually sign people up. They never disclose the fees (additional receiver to name one) and as far as installation goes they wait until the last possible minute to tell the customer that there is a charge for the install itself, not setting it up but actually putting the receivers in. Maam, I apologize that this happened to you. Also on that tivo unit, right now you could get a brand new one for just a little more than he wanted to sell you a stolen one for. Oh yes, that happens a lot too. All of you current customers out there, if you have additional equipment installed, watch those installers, they have been known to steal the access cards to go and put in their friends receivers and just in case you aren't aware, you are responsible for any and all incurred charges unless you can get a good lawyer or get a sympathetic customer service rep with directv who will credit the bogus charges. I hope that everything works out ok.

Ok I finally got threw to direct4u and spoke with a sup, Asper. He heard my story and said that someone will be over to pick up the tivo. I said what about the damage and the installation? He repeated that someone will be over for the tivo. I told him that they put holes in my siding. He was very quiet and asked me what do you want me to do. Well I did not know what to say. How about fix the problem your company made for starters. He then told me that someone will be contacting me from the installation department today to set up a time to come over and get the tivo and fix the holes. Ok they never called. I informed him that I had made a complaint with direct tv and that I will be making a complaint with the BBB. He stated ok. I hung up madder than a wet hen. Well where do I go from here? Directv is sending someone out to replace the disk so I will be fixed in a couple days. I have the receivers setting in my living room waiting to be installed and still no local channels. Today I am making a report with the bbb. I will update when I hear anything. Yours,

Ok so I have called and called direct4u to no avail. Let me start off by saying that I called Direct 4 U phone number 1 888 364-6897 and they just hung up on me. So I called back and then a very nice lady informed me that the tivo system was stolen that is why it was so cheap. I stopped payment on the check while I was on the phone with her. She told me to call back to customer service at 18773911212. I did and it was busy. I kept calling and it was still busy so I called directv and talked to the instation department and they were so nice. They are sending someone out wen to replace the disk. They told me not to worry about the tivo that I am not going to be in trouble about it. They took down my complaint and said that it will be esclated. Then I called direct4u 5 more times and finally got threw to a lady who told me that the installer should have installed all the rooms at no extra charge and that the tivo should have cost me 250.00 with the four receivers. She asked me to write a letter to a sup named Asper ... address is Direct4u 19585 N.E. 10th Ave C North Miami FL 33179..... explaining what happened. I sure will but I needed that address for the better buiness bureau too thanks. Well that is all so far... I will keep working on it and will give any address and phone numbers as I get them. So far I am still happy with Directv and getting happier all the time but Direct4u is another story.
