Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
This is insane! You see these green cabs everywhere! They place adds saying business is booming & there is money to be made. The people seem nice & helpful. They have quality training & people. You go through 16 hours of training & put you on the road as a Independent Contractor for 12 hours a day. Looks like everything is in place to make good money. I'm a hard worker & I don't work for slave pay but this is what happened to me. I started on Thursday & the car broke down so they reversed the lease for that day because they could not replace it. Friday made $40 but if I had to pay for 2 days I would be in the hole for $60.00 Worked Saturday & Sunday Gave them $90.00 newbie Start up Coupons & was still $49 in the hole Monday made $5.00 Tuesday Made $27.00 Total profit for 48 hours $32.00 but still owe them $28.00 I have come to realize the only ones making money here is Discount Cab leasing their cab! Not even their instructors can figure this out. They say I'm doing everything right. Their positive attitude covers up the harsh realty that they have recruit drivers because they have many driver turnovers. In other words more cabs than fares. Most of the fares are vouchers  that makes little. I can't find any old cabbie making over $100 a day yet they claim new drivers earn more than $150 a day average. This is impossible at least in the "slow summer" I worked the whole 12 Hours each day no breaks. Bottom line this is a scam Discount Cab is the only ones making any money here.

Really?  I've been with Discount Cab for 6 months now and I do very well! I made $131.30 today. You definitely have bad days and good days but, I average $125 a day. I'd love to know how you managed to OWE money at the end of your shifts! That's next to impossible if you actually work and don't take hour long breaks! There IS an element of luck to it but, you also have to know what zones are busy at what times and try to be there when the money is there. You can't expect to just sit in a parking lot in Goodyear or Apache Junction and wait for fares to fall in your lap. You have to hustle and chase them down! As for the company making money off your lease... Um, of course they make money off you! It's a business, not a charity! Cab driving isn't the right job for every person out there. Just because you couldn't cut it doesn't mean it's a scam or a rip off. I'm a 32 year old woman who has worked in kitchens all her life. I never thought I'd be doing this. The very idea of being a cabby would have terrified me not long ago. I took a chance on it and the trainers and facilitators are so helpful and nice, I felt right at home. If you like working at a very fast pace, keeping track of many things at once, trying to see three steps ahead and the excitement of gambling (Because that's what booking in is. Rolling the dice.) then you'd do well at this job. If you're mellow, laid back and can't multi-task, you're gonna lose money. Don't blame the company for your inability to do the job.

I am sorry to those who are not satisfied with Total Transit, parent of Discount Cab. We do care about our drivers immensely and it is the drivers who really are the unsung heros of our community. Driving a cab is very hard work and it is not an easy job, especially in the beginning. I know the voucher calls pay less than cash, but what I can tell you with 100% certainty is that we pay our drivers 85% of all voucher fares according to a very reliable high ranking individual.

There is a good and bad when it comes to vouchers. The bad  is that without vouchers we would have to cut half of the jobs we currently provide to the City of Glendale or Mesa. We simply would not be busy enough to support you. The other dowside is, yes, due to very high costs of setting up contracts and invoicing clients which in some cases is written off we cannot pay full cash meter.

The good is that these trips are additional business that would not be there without account business. It's found money. Now keep in mind drivers do not have to book in or accept fares and there are drivers that generate their own business. We invest in account business and marketing to help. I promise you that Total Transit is  not out to get anyone and sadly no job is perfect. It's a tough job.

I would be hapy to talk to you about the balance you owe and see if there is a way to make amends with you or even give you another opportunity to drive.... If not, just know we are listening and we really do care for whatever that is worth. The owner of the company is therr everyday and works very hard to this day and always thinks of our drivers. On behalf of Total Transit and the owner I apologize and hope you find great success and peace in your next journey. Thanks for listening and please excuse typos; I am using my mobile device.

Discount Cab scams patrons, drivers and insurance companys.

I have worked at Discount Cab and they are definitely scamming everyone they can.  Here are some points I feel compelled to report.

  • You are told you are a subcontractor but this is not true because they never ask for a bid. Also, they cant fill out a legitimate 1099 because they dont pay you, you pay them.

  • You are not an employee because they do not withhold taxes.

  • You are under a system called 'Indentured Servitude' because you start off the day in debt and if you dont take in enough fares to cover the debt then they simply take all of your money and carry the debt into the next day.

  • They steal your money in two different ways. First, they have you under something called the voucher system. This is a scam because they charge the insurance company double what a normal fare would be and then pay the driver about half of what a normal fare would be. Drivers put up with this because of the culture of fear that if you say anything about it they simply refuse to lease you a cab. Second, they steal your tips by charging you $2.00 for every call. This is charged to you whether you actually carry a passenger or not and whether you receive a tip or not.

  • There was no 'training' per se. Just a brief overview consisting of only a few minutes. Then they make you sign a paper with 27 points on it saying that you understand your job. This paper is not signed by anyone else and is used against you when you ask them why you are not making any money.

  • I was making about $20 a day for my first few days until I complained about the vouchers. Then I started loosing money and now I am indentured.
This is what I think is happening.

Total Transit is a corporation. This means they have to continually produce more and more profit.

In this economy, fewer people are taking cabs and the rates have reached the maximum. The only place left to get money from is the drivers. But if they do this too much the drivers will simply look for other work. The truth is that they do not need more drivers. They need more profit. So, someone came up with a brilliant plan!

The decided that they would keep the required number of drivers buy manipulating who gets what calls. The established drivers would get the gravy fares to compensate for the money that was stolen from them. Then they they will hire new drivers, of which there are an unlimited supply in this economy, give them the voucher jobs and unprofitable areas. The new driver will not make any money and will be told it is their own fault because they don't know their job. They will be told it must be their own fault because, look!, the other drivers are making money?! This causes the unsuspecting honest worker to keep coming back the next day and try harder and hope for a good fare to come in at random. This will never happen. In my case it will result in eviction and homelessness I am sure. Whether it does or not is no concern of theirs. The established drivers and the public remain blissfully unaware.

This is a truly criminal organization in my opinion and it must be stopped! Please! Is there a decent human being left on the planet?

I agree with the OP. The only ones making money is Discount Cab. My experience was the same as the op almost word for word except I loss $12 dollars by the time, I paid for gas and the car wash and the dispatch fees.

They are nothing more than a glorified Amway. All they care about is leasing cabs, they could care less, if the drivers make any money. Why should they? Leasing cabs is how they make money. They need to stop advertising this as a job on Craigslist.

I will walk instead of using Discount Cab. They are the ultimate Phoenix rip-off. They should change the name of the company to Rip Off People Cab.

Discount Cab not a Rip off

#7UPDATE EX-employee responds

Thu, June 14, 2012

I have worked for discount cab as a driver in the past and would like to make it clear that they are not a rip off. I made enough money while working at discount cab Monday thru Friday 4am to 4pm to support myself for the year I had no job. In the begining it did start off slow as I was informed might happen with the learning curve. However after a week giving it all my time and effort I had no problem making at a minimum 100 dollars  a day take home. In some cases I was making well over 100 dollars a day. It requires a little hard work and dedication to learn the Zones and system but it can really pay off once you get it down.

Most people who give up after a few days and will always say that there is no way to make money but they need to give it a chance and put the effort in to learn the system as well as the Zones, not to mention most forget that this is a customer service postion and treat the people they pick up bad. If you treat the people you pick up bad then your not going to get a tip! This job is not for everyone and Im sure if it was a rip off then they would have been out of business a long time ago. Just my thoughts and my experience with the company.
