In September 2009, a girl arrived at the front door of my apartment community looking to sell me a magazine for a school fundraiser, for a school group that was about entrepreneurship, in order to earn points to get to go on a trip. I turned her down several times. "I have too many magazines, no time to read, have everything I need," etc. She was extremely energetic, witty, funny, but almost unprofessional because some of her sense of humor was off or a little over the top for a stranger. She finally convinced me to buy a magazine for my boyfriend for the holidays. I really just bought it so she would go away. I told her I'd write a check and she begged me to give her a credit card or cash- That's when I first became really suspicious. She said she doesn't get her points immediately for checks and the contest was almost over. I gave her a check anyway. I thought the price of the magazine was outrageous- 50 bucks for a Rolling Stone subscription- but I figured the organization also kept some to send these students on their trip. She gave me a receipt that said if I was interested in cancelling my order, I had 72 hours to do so. I figured it was legit. After she left, she even taped a little note to my door to prevent "other students in the contest" from "bothering me". In the beginning of October the check cleared my bank. It is now 1/4/2010 and I have never received a magazine. I got all the information about the check, the bank the check was cashed at and the company from my bank. They did a little research on the company for me and said nothing was really coming up. I did more research and found that other people have realized it's a scam as well. How frustrating. I had just graduated, so I really related to this girl and wanted to help her out. I never understand how people can fully take advantage of other's money and willingness to be nice/help out. There is no number for this company. In order to fill out their online inquiry form, you must know your receipt number- which in 6 months I have surely misplaced, their company is listed as located in Texas, but the bank that cashed by check is in Huntington NY. I even used the number on the website provided as a fax contact number and faxed a copy of my check with a note saying that my order or a refund better arrive soon and no word....so far there's no way for me to follow through and contact someone to get my money back.
