On 2/20/07 I attempted to sign up for the Earthlink Muni WiFi service in Anaheim, CA. Earthlink is a company that is having major financial problems, so they are looking to expand their business into citywide wifi networks, Anaheim was the first such network. I called the sales number for WiFi product and spoke to an incompetent sales representative who knew nothing about computers.

The Earthlink sales representative told me that I was ordering the Earthlink Wifi service at $18 per months for three months and then it would be $21 a month after. The sales rep told me he would send a Pepwave wifi modem to my address for a $19.95 shipping fee, so for less than $40 I would have broadband wifi set up. The Earthlink sales rep instead ordered a $60 Linksys laptop wireless card with a $20 shipping charge, which cost me $80.

I never agreed for Earthlink to charge me $106 for this Wifi service. I asked to ship back the Linksys wifi card back to Earthlink since I never ordered it, but I was told it will take weeks and weeks for me to get a return label in the mail. So it looks like I am stuck with a $60 wifi card that you can buy for $35 at Walmart and a $20 shipping charge.

Earthlink Muni wifi has been a nightmare to deal with and I do not recommend that any customer in Anaheim, Pasadena, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Milpitas, Houston or Corpus Christi ever sign up for this horrible wifi service. I am considering filing a small claims lawsuit against Earthlink for fraud, maybe that will get their attention.
