We are a hardworking roofing business in the Dallas Fortworth area with a limited marketing budget. We stumbled across Ed's Survey Services on the rooferscoffeeshop.com and contacted them to possibly do some cold calling for us in gated communities where door to door walking was prohibited.
We spoke with Ed "if that's his real name" who sold us on his outfit. He said he had been doing telemarketing for businesses for more than 20 years. He sent a couple of example scripts that he had used in the past which were sophomoric at best. When I raised questions about the scripts which seemed fake Ed said he would tailor the script to our business and I should send him an example of a script we would like used. He also asked for us to give him cross streets in the gated communities we would like called, and he would personally call there for us.
I was appreciative of his willingness to work with our script and call in direct areas. He asked for $400 dollars for 14 hours of telemarketing and appointment setting. So we foolishly sent him a check in hopes that we could get some solid sales appointments out of it.
The next day we received what seemed like an auto email that saying " captured 2 leads last night, sending soon. Ed's" and later that day we received the 2 leads.
The 2 leads were legitimate addresses in the same city that we requested but they were nowhere near the gated communities and both the phone numbers were disconnected. So we contacted Ed and told him these were not in or even around the cross streets we had sent him and that the numbers were no good. He apologized and said he would not count those hours towards our 14.
The next day the same routine occurred except this time the addresses were just in the middle of some street somewhere and didn't even belong to any residence and all the numbers were disconnected. When we tried calling Ed to find out what was going on he would not take our calls and has not returned the numerous emails we have sent.
All I can say is it's a real good thing he is in a different state from us. These type of people are really going to have some answering to do on judgement day.
