Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?

An allergic reaction and asthma attack sent me to the ER at St Mark's Hospital in Salt Lake City. I had just recently received my insurance card and called to find out where I could go that was in-network and have them my insurance card when I went in.

I later got a bill for "emergency evaluation & management services" from Em Phys Integrated Care (EPIC) stating that immediate payment was required and at the bottom was a message in allcaps "WE HAVE BILLED YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY AND THEY HAVE DENIED PAYMENT. CONTACT YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY FOR AN EXPLANATION IF YOU FEEL THE CLAIM SHOULD HAVE BEEN PAID."

I contacted my insurance company and they have not been billed for this claim. I have received a second letter and the insurance company still has not been billed. I have been unable to call Em Phys Integrated Care (EPIC) during their business hours. I have to try get through during my own work hours and my breaks are limited. My other options are to pay by check or credit card by mail or pay online. Neither option allows for insurance information. The website doesn't look like a real payment portal and the url looks suspicious. I have no way to give them my insurance information except to take time off work to deal with them over the phone.

They are lying about billing my insurance company and demanding immediate payment. The way they have things set up it looks like they are billing patients directly first so they can double bill.

I'm afraid this is going to hurt my credit. I'm afraid I could have my wages garnished for something that should be mostly covered. This could destroy my life. I can't even verify that the "emergency evaluation & management services" are even valid charges. Other bills from the emergency visit have been billed to my insurance just fine and my deductible is significantly less than the bill. I feel like I am really being taken advantage of and have no recourse.

EPIC does get insurance information from the hospital

On the phone with the billing office, they had my billing information, and the supervisor I spoke with could see that they were contracted with my insurance company, yet submitted the bill for a plan than was non-contracted and not even available in my area. Of course it was denied. She said she would straighten it out, but I still think this should be investigated. Deliberately billing the wrong insurance plan affiliated with the same insurance company is a common trick that gets the claim denied, then the patient is billed, and then the correct insurance can be billed as well. I find it really disturbing that they had the correct information all along, if they only looked. How did they manage to submit the bill to the wrong plan when the plan was clearly specified on my card AND in their system?

I have 45 days to see if this is cleared up.

EPIC claims they BILLED my insurance, yet they NEVER GOT my insurance information.

"Unfortunately the hospital does not give us new insurance information so the only way we can get that information is form the patients them self."

And yet EPIC doesn't really offer patients any way to give them their insurance information, except through the hospital.

It was my FIRST TIME going to that hopspital. It was NOT NEW insurance information. The doctor who is supposedly part of the EPIC group was right there when I presented my card for billing purposes. This would mean EPIC NEVER gets patients' insurance information, so how are they sending me bills stating they already billed my insurance? And how did they get my CONTACT information without getting my INSURANCE information? That information comes from the same source; the hospital. And why are there charges on the bill for emergency administration when the HOSPITAL provided that and was already paid? The only thing this adds up to is FRAUD.

Good Morning:

I would love to help this Patient but I do need some more information like the PT’s name, Date of Services, Phone number and/or Date of Birth.

Unfortunately the hospital does not give us new insurance information so the only way we can get that information is form the patients them self. I would be happy to get this information from the patient so we can bill his correct insurance. If needed I can schedule a time to speak with the patient after hours or we can communicate via email.

Thanks You,
