Envirofone offer cash back to recycle your old mobile.

I sent my iPhone 3G to them via Royal Mail special delivery after they quoted me 157 online to buy my phone.  This was more than 20 than any other mobile phone recycling website, which is why I chose them.

I sent the phone in the packaging they supplied (a bubble wrap envelope) PLUS additional packaging to ensure my immaculate condition phone reached them safely.

Within 2 hours of them receiving my phone, I received an email from them saying that my phone had been through their testing and because of a crack in the case and they could only offer me less money:

------------
Dear X

Thanks for sending your old mobile phone to Envirofone for recycling.

Unfortunately the mobile phone does not fully meet our terms and conditions for the following reason:

Mobile phone has a cracked back

Because of this we cannot offer you the full value of your mobile phone but we can offer you 141.35.
--------------

I emailed them stating that the phone was in immaculate condition (not even a scratch), it had been kept in a case the whole time and it had never been dropped, so they must be mistaken and please check again.

They called me straight away to say that their testing centre 'might' have discovered a 'hairline' crack that isn't visible to the naked eye, only under a microscope, hence me not being aware of it.

I asked for their explanation to be put in writing.

-------

Dear X,

Im sorry to hear you that you are not happy with the testing verdict. A cracked back tends to be a very thin hairline crack which is usually located around the charger port, where the headphones are plugged into the phone or near the volume key. This fault is a common fault with the I-phone and can often go unnoticed. There has been some internet coverage about this common fault online.

I can confirm that the package wasnt damaged on arrival however it may be the case that they have been unfortunately damaged in transit. If you feel that the damage was definitely not there before sending the phone I would advise you can try and make a claim with Royal Mail. I cannot guarantee this will be successful as it is a different company.

If there is anything else I can help you with please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards,

On further investigation, I am not the first person to be duped into sending a perfectly good phone to them and getting offered less money than originally offered:

It seems like they offer you a better quote than any other

mobile phone recycling website so that decide to use them and then they make up a reason why they cannot pay you the full amount offered. The review above states anything from cracked LCD, water damage to faulty sim card reader.

Their facebook page is also full of unhappy customers with similar stories.
