I have read the other entries on this site regarding family Dollar Stores. They all seem believable to me. I am a former employee of this company and held a management position.

I often had to open and close the store alone due to lack of payroll hours. I was sometimes there several hours alone. I received a small salary pay for approximately 50 hours of work per week.

The reason I am writing this report is to try to find out some information. I recently received notice that there is a class action lawsuit against Family Dollar Stores in regards to unfair labor practices for their managers.

Somehow my paperwork was misplaced in the craziness of the holidays. I am looking for information on how to find out what law firm is handling this case.

thank you for any information you can provide.

Thanks for your responce, it make me feel good to know that there is real people out there yet. Tammy, you are not alone. There are lots of Family Dollar Employees who have banned together to fight this company. Currently there are about 5 new lawsuits that you can opt in right now. Theres overtime issues, EEOC, and time shaving. Please, if you need to talk Family Dollar has forums out there and we will help you. The only problem is THIS forum doesnt allow you to give out the websights and links. Go to the Google search, put in Family Dollar Employees Speak Out, and you will find a wonderful forum who can help you with dealing with the pressures of being a Family Dollar employee, (or former). Family Dollar has hurt so many people and they deserve to be shut down.

i have worked for this company for 2yrs. i have been sent to other stores and also manage a store.they treat people with no respect. they cheat in inventories, they verbaly, physicaly, and mentally abuse you and when there done with you they dispose of you like garbage. they fire you wrongly for getting hurt, or you complain. i know cuz i got sent to dispose of people and hire the next victum. i would clean store up and wait for the next person to fall.i worked long hours and very little pay. i made a complaint with the goverment and now i suffer to constant harassment and abuse. i have been put on a medical leave and have to take medacation just so i can try to have a normal day. they have cut off a income and health benifits and denied me to return to work so i can support my children. i don't know whats worse, the fact i lived threw there abuse or the fact if someone dosn't stop companies like this my children will grow up having to work for people and companies like this. fd i hope your enjoying yourself for ruining people lives, cuz judgement day will come and heaven help you if it's a much higher then a court of law. i'm waiting for justice yet, and it's been pure hell. god bless all the fd workers and may peace be with you all. sincerly your, waiting for judgement day manager/traveling manager

I too had severe problems with FD. I had a switch in DM's. My new DM didn't like my old DM so she wanted her own people in. Found out she was ripping off the company big time. Have documented proof. The new DM found out and now won't permit me to enter the store. Sent copy of signed proof certified mail to the President of the company - they never signed for it and the Post Office says they cannot track it. Sent it again. Same response. Called the head of protective and the vice president - it was swept under the rug. Called my old DM and he said never to trust the new DM and she's a lier and noone associates with her. I documented everything and have signed affidavits. Would you believe noone in the company wants to know about payouts she did in my store and pocketed, her husband doing the floors and her paying herself for it, having her husband doing shelving when her telephone for DM was disconnected to pay herself to pay her bill. Ever call a DM and their phone is disconnected? I have and so has everyone in this district. I kept everything and noone from the company wants to know - think something is funny?

Hi, I was asked to fill in at another store near the store that I am currently an assistant manager at and I played the part of manager at that other store. My DM made me salaried, and I spent 3 months there. I finally returned to my home store and now I am making less then I did before I left. they say that it is because since I went salary (temporarilly) that now I am in a different tax bracket. I cant live on that sort of salary, this ever happened to anyone else? thanks.

You know, 6 weeks ago when the VIP walked in my store, belittled and humiliated me and my staff, made me cry on my sales floor, etc...etc...I handed out my hand to him and said...I RESIGN. And he was putting his hand out also, until he comprehended my words, pulled his hand away and said, Oh what kind of manager could make a decision like that in an hour??? I said, I can, as I have been thinking about this moment for a long time now, not just during this visit. He looks at me and says, Oh, really, lets go over to your apparel and look at it. There I am. the idiot, walking behind this man and just continuing on as if I didnt just utter the words "I Resign." I finally say, Im walking out now, and he calls the asst DM over and tells her I was resigning, but he thinks I just need a career change so he walks out of the store, and she tells me, Ill be back tomorrow and well talk about a career change. I dont have any managers right now for the store so would you just wait until I get one. And that will be in about 6 weeks. And there they all went, out the door, and there I stood, a weakened no back boned manager. I look and think back now on what an absolute green niaeve person I was to not think about the set up that just happened to me last week. 4 weeks went by and all of a sudden loss prevention, the asst dm, and the "NEW" manager all walk in un announced, and tell me they have a new manager and that my services are no longer needed and goodbye. So I left. Pretty messed up I think. Anyway, Lance from NM and Dave with info on EEOC, Ive joined the Yahoo group which was easy to find and I want EVERY FD EX EMPLOYEE,PLEASE JOIN!!!! Look at my story from Ruidoso NM. i have also done saeveral rebuttals on this site concerning Family Dollar. If i knew how to get compensation or recompense for their actions I certanly would do it. But it seems they have all their I dotted and t's crossed. This company is a scam ewhen it comes to the fair laBOR ACT OR IT SHOULD BE REWRITTEN IN ORDER TO STOP LEGALIZED SALVERY AS THIS. Family Dollar Employees SPEAK OUT NOW ..Family Dollar is a cheap, pennypinching company who does not care about any quality of life for their employees.

#12UPDATE Employee

Fri, July 02, 2004

I want to Thank you all for the responses and info on the eeoc concerning the overtime and hours us store managers endure just to TRY and get the job done. I have been a store manager for Family Dollar for over a year now and can truly say that the expectationns and demands that the company demands on their managers is nothing more than legalized slavery. We have to be 100 plus percent totally ommitted to these sttores because we are given a payroll budgetttttt thats always 2 people short, so we the managers have no outside life what so ever because what is required to do on a daily basis in your retail store, goes way beyond closing time. It is impossible to run the stores on the given hours and budgets. What ON EARTH are they thinking???? As it is now, managers are required to work 52 hours per week. But, by the end of the week, that ends up," being the gods honest truth," anywhere from 80 to 90 hours worked in reality for the store managers. The company is getting a free employee. And you are it. And why are we it?? Because we had a BIG L on our forehead when we accepteds the job on a salary. LOOOOsers. Us Managers? No we are not. But then again, Yes WE ARE LOOSERS because we are classified as Exempt. Exempt?? And what are we Exempt from??? It surely isnt fropm working at the store on the one day per week that the PrePrinted schedule on the wall says, OFF in the slot next to your name. It surely isnt a kind meaning from your company, exempting you from work for just a couple of hours to see your childs first school play. It means only one thing. RIPOFF. Lets squeeze another human beings work week, into this one person, and lets call that one person, Manager. Its kind of a two for one deal. The original 52 hours required is not enough for the 80 needed, so we get Manager. Manager is exempt from OVERTIME because his daily work activities are manager status and not manual labor. Manager does office paperwork. And if Manager has to cashier, stock, offload the semi truck every week, and meet all the daily requireds, and fill in for the sick, call in cashier, for two straight days, and mop the 2500 sq ft store because there is no more floor service supplied by the company any more, as you know,it will save this company money because Manager gets no overtime because he is exempt. Family Dollar is a cheap, pennypinching company who does not care about any quality of life for their employees. They will burn them out before the promised bonuses and raises as you know, that will save the company money. More profits. So what about complaints on the dirty stores. We got two for one out of that store for almost a year. And when Manager falls out??? Theres another one waiting for their DREAM JOB. And the cycle stars all over again. WHAT IS WRONG HERE CAN ANYONE EXPLAIN HOW THIS COMPANY GETS AWAY WITH IT. AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO WILL SPEAK OUT. IF I HAVE TO, I WILL GIVE MY REAL NAME AND TOWN. THEN I WILL HOLD A NEWS CONFERENCE IN FRONT OF THE FOODSTAMP OFFICE FOR ALL TO JOIN. BUT IT SEEMS THERE IS NO OTHER FD EMPLOYEE SUPPORTERS. PLEASE GIVE ME SOME HOPE. SLEEPLESS IN THE DESERT

I HAVE THE ANSWER!!!! THE STORY WAS DONE BY STONE PHILLIPS

#13UPDATE EX-employee responds

Sun, June 20, 2004

YOU KNOW, I CHECK BACK TO THIS SITE EVERY NOW AND THEN, JUST TO SEE IF ANYTHING HAS CHANGED. IT HAS NOT CHANGED A BIT. I POSTED ON THIS SITE OVER A YEAR AGO, AND THE STORIES I AM READING NOW ARE THE SAME AS THEY WERE TWO, THREE AND FOUR YEARS AGO. IS ANYONE LEARNING ANYTHING HERE?? TO THE MANAGER STILL EMPLOYED IN ARIZONA, I FEEL FOR YOU. YEARS AGO WHEN I WAS EMPLOYED THERE, YOUR STORY COULD HAVE BEEN TOLD BY THE MANAGER I'D HAD AT THE TIME. SHE WAS A YOUNG GIRL, JUST 23 YEARS OLD, SHE HAD SUCH AMBITION, GAVE THAT JOB EVERY OUNCE OF ENERGY SHE HAD. MANY TIMES AFTER HER DM WOULD COME IN TO DEGRADE HER AS USUAL, SHE WOULD GO IN THE OFFICE AFTER HE LEFT TO CRY. WHAT A HORRIBLY SAD SIGHT TO WATCH THIS POOR GIRL'S SPIRIT BE STEPPED ON. FAMILY DOLLAR WAS HER FIRST REAL JOB, SHE STARTED WHEN SHE WAS JUST 17. HER POSITION CAME TO AN END ONE NIGHT WHEN HER AND I WERE THE ONLY TWO EMPLOYEES THERE (AS IS ALWAYS THE CASE AT FAMILY DOLLAR, THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH PAYROLL TO HAVE ANYMORE THAN THAT) I WAS AT THE REGISTER AND SHE WAS AT THE BACK OF THE STORE ON THE LADDER, PLACING ITEMS ON THE TOP SHELF WHEN SHE FELL, AND LANDED ON HER HEAD. SHE WAS NOT CONCIOUS WHEN THE AMBULANCE ARRIVED. TO MAKE A VERY LONG STORY SHORT, SHE WILL HAVE BRAIN DAMAGE FOR THE REST OF HER LIFE. SHE CANNOT WALK WITHOUT THE HELP OF A DEVICE, AND SHE WILL NEVER WORK AGAIN, EVER, ANYWHERE. FAMILY DOLLAR DRAGGED THIS CASE THROUGH COURT FOR YEARS!! THEY ATTEMPTED TO SETTLE THE CASE OUT OF COURT FOR 100,000 DOLLARS! THIS GIRL WILL NEVER WORK AGAIN FOR THE REST OF HER NATURAL LIFE (THEY ATTEMPTED TO ACCUSE HER OF FALLING "ON PURPOSE" ) CAN YOU IMAGINE LIVING ON 100,000 DOLLARS FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE? THAT COMPANY IN A ROUNDABOUT WAY, RUINED HER LIFE. ITS BEEN YEARS SINCE I HAVE STEPPED FOOT IN A FAMILY DOLLAR, THE ENTIRE COMPANY REPULSES ME. BEFORE WORKING THERE, NEVER HAD I EXPERIENCED SUCH SHODDY EMPLOYMENT PRACTICES, CUT THROAT, TWO FACED, ARROGANT INDIVIDUALS. I AM ASHAMED TO SAY I WORKED THERE FOR FIVE YEARS OF MY LIFE. THE ONLY WAY TO STOP A CORRUPT COMPANY, IS TO HIT THEM IN THE ONLY AREA THEY RECOGNIZE, THERE POCKET. IF MORE WOULD BE DONE TO SHED LIGHT ON THESE STORIES, AND PEOPLE WOULD TRULY JUST STOP SHOPPING THERE, THEY WOULD HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO LOOK AT THINGS FROM A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE. THERE ARE MEDIA OUTLETS THAT WOULD BE WILLING TO TAKE ON A SUBJECT LIKE THIS. DATELINE DID A STORY ABOUT 5 YEARS AGO ON A COMPANY CALLED "THE ASSOCIATES". BELIEVE ME, THE ASSOCIATES WERE NOT HAPPY. THE STORY WAS DONE BY STONE PHILLIPS. YOU CAN ACCESS THE WEBSITES AT MSNBC. THERE IS SAFETY IN NUMBERS. THE MORE OF YOU, THE BETTER! I WILL REPEAT WHAT I HAD SAID IN MY POST LAST YEAR. FAMILY DOLLAR DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOU. YOU ARE A DIME A DOZEN, AND THEY CAN REPLACE YOU AS QUICKLY AS THEY FOUND YOU. (AND THEY WILL). THERE ARE PLENTY OF KIDS FRESH OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL WHO ARE TOO INEXPERIENCED TO KNOW BETTER AND WILL WORK LIKE DOGS FOR A LITTLE BIT OF MALL MONEY. IF YOU MAKE NOISE, YOUR OUT!! AS I SAID IN MY LAST POST, WHAT HAPPENED TO ME AT FAMILY DOLLAR WAS A BLESSING, IT TAUGHT ME MANY VALUABLE LESSONS, AND I AM BLESSED TO HAVE THE GREATEST JOB IN THE ENTIRE WORLD NOW. I NOW KNOW WHAT ITS LIKE TO WORK FOR PEOPLE WHO TRULY APPRECIATE ME, AND THEY PAY ME ACCORDINGLY. GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL, AND IF I CAN BE OF ANY ASSISTANCE TO ANYONE, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY STORE FINED BY STATE AUTHORITIES

#14Consumer Suggestion

Tue, June 15, 2004

Approximate date of incident: During 2003 Also, I can not be certain whether this was the FAMILY Dollar Store. Obviously, someone with access to some old company records could probably confirm whether a Family Dollar Store ever (or still does) operate in Jersey City, NJ. From the news report I DO clearly remember, among other details, that the store did have the phrase "Dollar Store" in its name. ANYWAY--The Jersey City case came to the attention of the Wage And Hour Division of the New Jersey Dept. of Labor And Industry because store employees were ordered to, in effect, "live" in the store, under threat of firing if they went home. Needless to say Wage And Hour Investigators not only issued a summons to the store management but ordered payment of back wages to be paid, where applicable, at the State-mandated rate of 150% wages for hours worked (or held "prisoner") in excess of 40 hours in a given week. Also, as I recall, the victims did not speak English or Spanish and may have been illegal immigrants--thus giving the management increased "leverage" in meting-out its illegal conduct. It's possible some labor unions might offer some information, or even assistance. Service Employees International (a union independent of AFL-CIO) and Retail Clerks International, an AFL-CIO member union, should, at least, be able to offer "moral support" and be able to put one in-touch with sympathetic politicians.

Hi all! I'm an ex-FDS Store Manager who found himself on the defensive after filing a complaint opposing the discriminatory practices of my DM. After that FDS did all they could to ensure that I wouldn't succeed and eventually I was gone. I'm presently working with the Division of Human Rights, EEOC, and a private attorney in my home state of NY. Be great to hear from everyone offline and investigate the possibilities of organizing a group legal action as there are many similarities with the stories I read here. Due to being currently employed with FD, I cannot have my true first name or my location revealed I hope you all will understand that and still post this for all FD Employees. FD managers are getting ripped off on the exempt salary status given to them. We are required to work at least 52 hours and 6 days per week, and that is ONLY, if your not behind. We are only allowed to have that one day off IF...we are current, Current???How many times can we say, WE ARE Current?? I dont know of one store that isnt running on that fine deadline date for anything that is required to run the store on a daily basis. According to your DM, and the idiot VP who flys in on his lear jet, with manicured nails and tells you that if you would follow all the procedures correctly, your business would run smooth. And Do you know what happens to MANAGERS who dont follow the FD guidelines. How dare he come to my store. The store that I stayed in for 20 straight hours the night before, so my store would be beautiful when he walked in. How dare he belittle me and my staff. How dare him insult and humiliate me on the sales floor. And the last unacceptable issue is, if anyone, especially an employee of my company, ever come into my store and proceeds to mess with my emotions and make me cry,..... you might as well start running. I am one mad mean wicked manager now, and you dont even want to be caught by this mad crying maniac with no sleep. The one who has no outside life but this store. The one who eats, breathes, and lives as a FD recluse with out no after the store, life what-so-=ever.A living and breathing FD human This man has never, off loaded a truck before, nor stuck around a store long enough to see what us managers really deal with outside of the daily routine. MY GOD, WE HAVE NO LIFE!!!! FD will estimate what it takes to run a store smoothly. If an analyist calculated what it would take to run a FD store smoothly, lets say,200 hours and 1,700.00 in payroll per week and no one working overtime. Well, then it happens. The bigwigs look at that figure, delete two employees and 300.00 and thats what management gets to deal with. The company squeezes every last ounce of breath from their burnt out managers who have to work 70,80, or more hours per week just to barely get ready for the next truck. Every thing that has been said by FD employees on this website is true. They are killing us. The company does not care about any quality of life for their employees. FD managers, we must speak out. Former employees, like Lance in NM. I heard about him and his plight before I ever saw his responses on this site. Its true. FAMILY DOLLAR WANTS TOO MUCH FOR TOO LITTLE

#24UPDATE EX-employee responds

Wed, June 02, 2004

I too am a former FAMILY DOLLAR STORE manager. I worked for the company twice first for a year and then for three and a half years. I have no complaints about the majority of the DISTRICT MANAGERS that I worked under. My complaint is about the expectations for the amount of payroll you are given. I worked on average 75 TO 90 hours per week (Every Week) to keep my store in the required conditions. I worked as many as 118 hours in one week and as many as 37 straight hours to prepare for inventory. I have unloaded trucks with as many as 800 cartons by myself on numerous occations. The payroll they allow you is not enough to pay someone to help you do the majority of the things that need to be done. You have no money to train the assistants properly. Therefore you can't deligate anything to the assistant. I don't know anyone that has had or does have enough payroll to pay the assistant to be in the office at the same time as the manager. I was given enough payroll for myself and a cashier (per shift) any payroll above that is spent on schematics and freight. All sweeping and mopping was done by me, who could afford to pay anyone to stay over?. On top of all that I would be asked to save up to a hundred dollars on payroll each week. I could go on and on, but I beleive I have said enough. Thank You,

I also was a manager for a Family Dollar store in Arizona, and I only recieved 160 hours in payroll and that included my 52 required hours. I was only allowed to have myself and one other employee unload the truck no matter what the size was. I worked several times by myself for up to 8 hours. Once during a required budget meeting, my assistant was alone for 7 hours due to a call in, and when I told the District Manager what was going on in my store, he said if she ever wants to be a manager she better get used to it. He wouldn't let me leave the meeting, even though it was for the good of the store. He was very unwilling to come in and help, no matter what the issue was. I have worked up to as many hours as 80 in one week with no extra compensation.

I WORKED WITH FAMILY DOLLAR STORES. I HAD A 12,500 SQ. FT. STORE. HAD THE 3RD HIGHEST SALES IN THE DISTRICT. HELP GET OUR SALES INCREASED TO 30% MORE THAN WHAT IT'S EVER BEEN. NOW THAT I HAVE LEFT SALES HAVE DROPPED. I STARTED OUT WITH A $1400.00 A WEEK PAYROLL. THEN WHEN THE NEXT QUARTER CAME OUT THE COMPANY DROPPED IT TO 1275.00 PER WEEK AND TOLD MY TO ORDER 3 TIMES AS MUCH. THEN STARTED MAKING THE SCHEDULE FOR ME. TELLING ME I COULD RUN THAT STORE WITH AND AVERAGE OF 2.3 PEOPLE A DAY. THEN WOULD BLOW ME OUT AND THREATEN TO FIRE ME IF I DIDN'T GET MY STORE CLEANED UP. I ENDED UP WALKING OUT AFTER WORKING THE REQUIRED 52 HOURS. THE DISTRICT MANAGER WENT IN BEHIND ME AND CHANGED MY HOURS TO 40 CUTTING MY LAST CHECK BY 200.00 I WAS ALSO TOLD IF I DIDN'T MEET THEIR STANDARDS THAT I COULD ONLY HAVE ONE DAY OFF A WEEK.
