My manager has done well for our store, having brought it out of the dump and making it the top one in our district. The problem is, he's anything but professional. I realize that having a problem with your boss is a common occurrence, but I feel I have some valid points in writing this report.

Managers for Family Dollar are salaried, and have to work something like 52-53 hours a week. My manager does it a little differently. He is usually scheduled to come in at 6am, but unlike everyone else's hours, his sometimes end in a blank (eg, 6am-[blank]). That wouldn't be cause for alarm, except that I worked out the hours he's actually in the store (I've never seen him there past 4pm), and he can't be working more than 45 hours a week, if that. There have been a couple of instances where I was working until close, and he, despite not being there for most of my shift, had not clocked out. I only learned about his required hourage when I started asking people about it, and it was implied that he does this purposefully. I have not worked to close on a day he has worked since.

His other hourage issue is that he's sometimes late, and not by a little. Two days in the same week, he was scheduled for 6am, and myself at 7. On both occasions, I waited at least half an hour until he showed up, meaning over the course of that week, he was at least three hours late. He left around 3pm on those days, despite his missing hours and his open schedule of 6am-[blank].

His conduct toward other employees is unacceptable. He has said some offensive things, and more often than not, they're about women. I've also seen him hold his hand to his chest in a way suggesting that he thought the stock guy he was talking to was mentally handicapped. That same employee was later solely blamed for not catching shoplifters, and was absolutely yelled at. The manager didn't give the newer hires any flack about it because he had forgotten to give them their loss-prevention sheets two and three weeks ago when they started.

I'm a little intimidated about contacting corporate and telling them their Golden Boy is abusing the rules and his employees. And I KNOW that stock guy isn't going to say anything, because after being rebuked, the manager started writing his (likely negative) 45-day review.

I am a Family Dollar employee, Manager at that. I am out on a work related injury. Our mandatory hours are 52 per week. There is actually a template that should be followed. On this templates it has a work schedule for every employee in the store. All we should do is fill in a name. We are only suppose to have one day off a week. Some District Managers will allow their Managers to take 2 days off if they work their 52 hours in 5 days. When I first started my only day off was Mondays I worked 3 open to closes and 60-80 hour weeks. This was because I ran the store with only three people. It was not until I had come back from maternity leave that I had found out one of the managers at a neighboring store, who had been with the store for 5 months had not worked a weekend since she started. This to me was unfair, not only to other managers but to her assistant. I had been employed by them for almost a year at this time. The District manager will most likely not do a thing. If they loose a Manager and one that they fell is good, would to the not only hurt the store but then they might be stuck running the store until a Manager is found. Corporate will not do anything as well. This company has given me such stress but I refuse to give up. If you are willing to fight a battle to do whats right, Then do it and GOOD LUCK. Many people just don't bother and that's why this company does not care about the people on the bottom.
