I own a shipping center that accepts prepaid shipments from customers. We've seen shipments like yours and they are labeled with a Ground shipping label. Those labels are not accepted in FEDEX drop off boxes. It is clearly documented on the boxes what they accept as well as the earliest times of daily pickups. Your package would have been, by your own error, misouted or even lost. It appears that you placed a Ground shipment into an air box. There's no one to blame but yourself. Now, is your copy of the tracking # printed from your original paperwork, or did you hand write it down? FEDEX has a long number in three sections which makes the actual tracking #'s confusing. If handwritten, it is very likely that you wrote it in error. Your feelings that here in the USA, "everything was precise, functioning and working" is a bit absurd. The USA, in many aspects, is the leader in technology, yet is still performed by human beings. No human is infallible. And don't forget that employees of this 'perfect technology' are more and more influenced by immigrants with weaker ability to communicate or assimilate to our constitutional culture. You are also at the mercy of Apple logging in your shipment as received. We get calls several times a week of which customers state that a company says they have never received the package. With zero exception in seven years, the company has always received the package properly by the shipper but merely did not log it in correctly.
