I received a charge for 9.95 on my American Express card that I knew I had not made. Charge appeared only as Direct Billing (Specialty Retail Store). I called the phone number on the charge and the billing company told me the charge was for free magazines and a donation to a "charity" called Frankly Speaking.

I called the number provided for Frankly Speaking and only got a recording that directed me to their website. This is the fun part! According to thier site, they "collect" donations on an "opt-out" basis. Apparently, they call your phone number and if the prerecorded message is allowed to play to completion (ie. if an answering machine picks up and records the message), they take that as your consent to donate 9.95 in exchange for some magazine.

I have no idea where these people got my credit card number. They have a link on thier website for people to request refunds...we'll see how that goes. Please note, I make no statements regarding the validity of this organizations charitable work, but I do object to them trying to sneak charges onto people credit cards.

You say we are the bad guys but,you have our name, our address, our city, our state, our zip, our website address, our e-mail address and our phone number. If we were a bad company why would we give you all our information. When you received your Credit Card in the mail it included an insert card or note informing you that you had Credit Card Insurance. You would be billed on your card if you did not call or write telling them you wanted to opt-out. If you didn't, you got billed automatically. Our program is similar but, our call gave you two opt-outs and a toll free number if you didn't want the magazines. Then you got the letter you mentioned in the complaint with a toll free number again to call. You elected not to call, so as we notified you we assumed you wanted to help the kids and receive hundreds of dollars worth of magazines for the meager sum of $9.95 covering shipping, handling and a few dollar donation. On top of that, your credit card was probably declined and you probably were never charged because I can't find you in my tens of thousands of happy satisfied supporters. Shame on you.
