The Western Union transfer is untraceable (and common to most scams). That's where the trail ends. All you can do is try and ratchet up your skepticism a bit so you don't get caught again. Once you have fallen for one of these scams you are a very likely target for other scammers.
Repeat after me : Free money doesn't magically appear in mailboxes. You don't win "grants" or sweepstakes that you never entered. You don't cash checks or money orders from strangers and send the money anywhere. The only reason to use Western Union money transfer is to send cash to someone you know very well.
Good luck.

This is a very typical fake check scam.
The money is gone.
Chalk this up to experience.
