I am the new Service Manager here at Fullerton Kia. I ran a report on all 1998 sportages in our service file going back to 2000. We had 29 in our database. We only had one 1998 sportage with a service visit close to the posting date of this complaint that had a concern even remotely similar to the one stated above. The repair order was 12-13-05, two days before the complaint. It reads as follows... 1. COMPLAINT : CUSTOMER STATES CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON 2. CAUSE : MAF CIRCUIT R/P EVAP EMISSION CONTROL MALFUNCTION THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR INTERNAL MALFUNCTION, HARNESS CORRODED IDLE AIR CONTROL BINDING 3. CORRECTION: REPLACED TPSENSOR REPLACED AND SOLDER IN NEW TPS HARNESS RPLACED IDLE AIRCONTROL MOTOR TESTED OK | Parts were 237.66 plus tax and labor was 332.50. This sounds nothing like the complaint and has nothing to do with the dashboard. The only customer named Mike with a 1998 sportage is from Anaheim and was in on january 2003 and march 2006 and had no complaints like this. The only customer from Lake Forest was in a month after the complaint for an unrelated campaign done under warranty. It is my position that the above complaint is a hoax. I welcome the complaintant to contact me at the dealer to provide proof of the above complaint.

1998 ! I got news, time to trade it in. Sorry your quote was higher than expected. It helps to get those things in writing up front. Then there's little room for Deviation on their part. I own my SECOND KIA IN A ROW now !! A 2005 Kia Sportage. Its a GEM. On all my previous US Cars I once owned, had nothing but problems every month. But Kia,............... Low Low Price for a good reliable vehicle. Sure Kia had some negative press in the past few years but so has everyone else, including Japanese. And rather go the way of the YUGO, Kia sprinted forward and today is a menace and a close rival to the Japanese today. It's been reported this year - Toyota, for example, arent afraid of the failing troubled companies of Ford and GM, but rather the Koreans gaining momentum and will bar none undersell them. Without Kia and Hyundai, You would still be at the whims of the 25 thousand dollar average SUV on the new market today. No thanks. I'm not paid by Kia nor affiliated, except for the part of being an honest customer. Thank you.

In most states, they MUST get an autorization for you to perform work over and above the quoted price, and they MUST give you a repair estimate in writing before you leave your car. If you failed to get that, then you may be screwed, however, I would get a written estimate from the other guy, then go to small claims court and sue the dealer. They will need to prove that they received a phone authorization, which would be easy enought to prove if you gave them your cell number to contact you if there was a problem.
