Be warned, GEICO the "15 minute phone call compnay" is redlining consumers, asking for all sorts of proof as to residency.

After being a customer for over 10 years, they claimed that my father's address in Brooklyn, NY was my garageing address and not Staten Island, NY. After sending in 60+ pages of proof, including bills, receipts, EZPass statements and sworn statements, they refused to budge. The big deal is that Brooklyn's insurance rates are 40% HIGHER than Staten Island.

THey are very uncaring people. However, the NYS Insurance Department is investigating and I have filed a civil suit. We'll see.

Valid proof of residence includes utility bills (land-line phone bill, electric, water, cable), W2 forms, bank statements, etc. Other proof such as leases, cellphone bills, record club memberships(!) are nice, but they usually are not considered valid proof. Underwriting generally will require two forms of proof. Ratejumping is common practice and rampant in NYC. It's amazing how many people live outside the City and yet have 212, 718, etc. area codes. Proof of residence is requested when something is out of kilter. Perhaps you have your drivers license address in Brooklyn, perhaps you had your photo inspection completed at a shop in Brooklyn. Perhaps you have a phone under your name in Brooklyn or you had an accident at or near your parents address in Brooklyn. For whatever reason, there is apparently cause for the underwriters to believe the vehicle is being kept there. The easiest (and only) way to have your policy rerated is to send the POR requested. Please don't send 60 pages of worthless documents, two good ones will do just fine.
