This guy, with dark hair and eyes, medium build, probably Spanish accent, was such a pro and I can't believe I fell for this. I paid $800 for five leather jackets with labels made in Italy. He offered to burn them to prove they were leather.

In the parking lot, when I first saw this guy, wearing a turtleneck and a jacket, driving his Hyundai SUV, he asked me directions to the airport. The story is the same as I have read elswhere. This fellow is in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

He said he had to go back home to London, England, that he was Spanish from Madrid. He actually could speak Spanish. He had these jackets, which were samples for Holt Renfrew, but his boss said to get rid of them so they would not have customs. He said he had to go home and bring his daughter an iPad.

The guy's name is fake and copies a well-known Italian designer with a similar name, and the address on the card is actually Tiffany's on Old Bond Street in London, England.

My story is like the other stories. I gave him cash. He is an astute judge of people and comes across as empathetic for his own ends. I hope he gets caught.

I just saw this same man! He approached me asking if I speak Spanish, which I do. He claimed that his wife is Peruvian (as I am) and said the same story you were given. Exactly the same story. Fortunately I did not give him any money. But he was super friendly and knew the street names and locations of places I’ve been to in Peru. He was very convincing and friendly.

Yes, greed is the cause for falling for a con.

Greed absolutely is the main factor. I think for me that is something to look at, because it is a shadow side for me to face within myself. That's interesting.

Thanks for engaging and I appreciate your feedback. I take the lesson and carry on wiser for it -  to face my own greed. It is totally my fault in that regard so thanks for your point.

He is an astute judge of people and comes across as empathetic for his own ends.

- Yes "con men" generally are good judges of people.  They know exactly what people they can separate from their money because of their greed not empathy.

Because let's get real.  You didn't give this guy $800 so he could get rid of the jackets and get is daughter an iPad(can we say first world problems).  You gave this guy $800 because he said that they were worth thousands of dollars and you could turn around and sell them. You didn't see empathy, you saw dollar signs.

As for him getting caught, the chances are slim to none.  These scams have been going on for decades in various forms and as long as people see things like this as "easy money" they will continue.
