We have a Glacier D3 and it provides enough water for six of us, even in the hottest months.
The water is the BEST I've ever tasted and I wouldn't consider going to something like R.O.
As for Stainless Steel being bad for you, this sounds like total rubbish. From cookware to water bottles, stainless steel is very popular and, presumably, safe.
As for the rust in the unit, the ONLY rust I've encountered is in the BOILER, which is normal! As water is boiled and the steam is sent into the storage tank via a tube, minerals and 'crud' are left behind.
We are on a well and we have a lot of iron in our water, which leaves behind a red, clay goo that you could probably use to make a pot!
The boiler needs to be opened up twice a year to be cleaned. It's not a big deal.
On the flip side, the D3 does require a bit of maintenance, but this is unit is larger than most, produces more water than most, so more maintenance is not surprising.
Plus the fact that it's under the counter does make it a bit of a pain to work on, but I'd rather work on my distiller than, say, my water heater (it's not too accessible either).
Also, I think the D3 has a rather high price tag, but I bought my NIB on eBay for about 1/5 of retail.
As for Glacier Distiller the company, they're a pretty good company.
I've had good luck with their technical support department. I hate paying the high shipping costs from Canada, but I've only had to order parts a few times.
The bottom line is, our D3 provides excellent water! The unit does require maintenance and some 'fiddling'....if you're not mechanically inclined then find a local company that can help you with the maintenance.
Best!
