I love middle eastern cuisine and while visiting the Christian quarter in the old city in Jerusalem I stopped by

the Hanady Restaurant for a quick falafel. The server was polite, prompt and helpful. The food arrived quickly, was well portioned and tasty. It wasn't the best falafel I've had and neither was it the worst.

The shock came when I got the bill, 70 shekels for a falafel!! It dawned on me that there were no prices on the

over head menu and the server did not give me a printed menu when I sat down. He had read off the choices from the overhead while describing the dishes. Not believing the price, I asked to see a menu and he pointed to the overhead. Now I got it, as long as tourists keep coming to the old city you can double or triple the going rate and get away with it. My mistake was trusting that they would be like all the other middle eastern restaurants I've

visited where you get good food at a fair price. I have to take some of the blame for not asking the price at the

time I ordered, but that does not excuse what they are doing.

If you don't mind paying too much, you will get a good meal at Hanady. If you want both good food and a fair price explore the restaurants in the Muslim quarter. I've found good falafels as low as 10 shekels and excellent sit down restaurants with a wide variety of great dishes where 70 shekels could buy you a feast. TIP: If the price is not listed, ask before buying.
