Net Detective 8.0 advertising suggests that it will enable you to access public and private databases to conduct Background Checks on individuals. It is simply a search engine to provide links to these resources, and each subsequent search costs additional money.

The Net Detective database is incomplete. It could not even provide a simple Name Search Verification equivalent to the Internet White Pages. In a search for Civil Lawsuits, the software provides links to Government databases by County; but they didn't even have links to two of the largest counties in the State of Texas: Dallas & Bexar (San Antonio).

In their advertising, they offer a 30-day Money-Back Guaranteee, but it difficult to contact them. I am waiting now to see if they will credit my charge.

Net Detective Advertising and Refunds ..somewhat misleading, but again few advertisements are not

I am a customer of Harris, and I was referred to this site by a friend, who feels the same way about Net Detective. Yes, the advertising is somewhat misleading, but again few advertisements are not. The purpose behind an advertisement of any product is to put the product or service's best foot forward, presenting all that is possible when using that product. With that in mind, every feature of the program that is advertised is there in the program, but unfortunately is not availible with some states or counties. I've found that roughly half of the country is not in the program, but this is most likely due to 9/11. I recall that many government sites were closed down to increase security, and few have opened back up since. When I first ordered the program, I was quite mad as I too felt the advertisments were misleading. I filled out the support form at www.harrisdigitalsupport.com, and demanded a refund. A day later, they e-mailed me and sent me a link to their refund form. The refund process is a tad lengthy. It requires you print, fill out and mail a refund form to their address in DeLand. This wouldn't matter for me anyway, as the address is just up the road from me in the next town over. Regardless, the refund process is there, and it does exist. I decided however to keep the program after fiddling around with it more. There is quite a lot of information in there, as it places all availible government information in one place, and it certainly saves time from searching around on Google. Personally, I feel for the company, as I have been in the small business arena before. Harris certainly is a small business, I used to work with a friend in a computer shop, and we've dealt with angry customers as well. Folks, there is no getting around that sometimes what you purchase does not turn out to be what you think it will be, but unless the business is genuinely fradulent, they usually will be happy to help you, so long as you don't insult them. While dealing with customers face to face, I can remember being called many a name because their new computer won't work (even though it usually was a simple problem caused by the customer themselves). I certainly didn't want to help those customers

If you haven't already done so, and the 30 days haven't expired, return everything to the return address on the package. (unless specifically stated in the original ad, you don't have to contact them first.) When you get your credit card statement, if there is no credit, you need to contest the charge to the credit card company. They will give you a credit while they check on the situation. Normally this will result in a full refund. If it doesn't, contact the Consumer Protection Division of your state attorney general's office. (Texas has good consumer protection laws, but Florida is weak, so you will have better luck in your own state.)
