I was traveling in Kingsport on Business in August 2001. My Jeep Cherokee's driver side rear tire has a slow leak and I knew I needed to get my tires replaced.

While in Kingsport my tire went flat. A collegue of mine suggested the tire store his family always used when they needed new tires.

I went to the store and they told me they would be putting Bridgestone tires on the Jeep (money was not a consideration).

I really wanted Michelins, but I was in a pinch. I went back to pick up the Jeep that afternoon and the guy behind the counter said they did not have any Bridgstones so they put Kelley tires on without calling me or asking my opinion.

It was 5:30 in the evening and I had to travel back to Knoxville (120 Miles) so I left begrudgingly with the Kelley tires.

I noticed on the drive home the tires had a good amount of road noise.

Then a few days later I also noticed that my Jeep was driving kind of strange. I took it to my regular tire store and they informed me that the tires on my Jeep were not even Kelley brand.

They were some no name brand of tire and I had (3).. yes (3) different sized tires on my vehicle.

My tire store then told me how dangerous this is and it is a wonder I was not involved in an accident.

I have a 22 month old daughter that is in my Jeep everyday of the week.

It infuriated me that this tire store had put my daughter's safety in jeopardy because of their unsavory business practices.

The other piece of the story is I am a woman. I am so tired of getting screwed at automotive and repair shops because of my gender.

I noticed in the post-stating comments that someone suggested that different sized tires not only are not dangerous, but could only lead to an accident if the driver was operating their car in a manner to lead so,... However, no this is not the case at all,..Different sized tires can severely damage your transmission. Tire sizes are read as (top wall/side wall/rim size) or 220/60/16, the 220 is the size of the length on the top of your tire from edge to edge if you were standing the tire upright, the 60 is the size of the length from the top of your tire to where the rim meets your tire, and the 16 is rim size, however just because two of those sizes are the same the tire could still be very much different. The 60 is also a percentage of the top wall, so it would be 60% of the 220, in other words a 220/60/16 would be a good deal bigger than 180/60/16. Even though the first number measures top wall, 60%of 180 is much less than 60%of 220 so while you think it might not be severely a big deal larger it actually is.  Which leads to why it can damage your transmission, if you're driver side tire is 25 millimeters taller than your passenger side then you know that the path they travel is not the same length, because their circumference is not the same, therefore if your driver side tire is trying to travel further than your passenger side tire then you will either rub one tire raw, drive in circles, or much more likely, tear your transmission up because your axles are not spinning together in unison,

That being stated: yes, shops do make mistakes, it is unfortunate but things do happen, with workloads being high on some days, stress from home, pay roll being cut short, etc etc, but most shops when they make a mistake will own up to it and fix the problem, like in this situation take the tires back on a defective exchange and give them the right tires,

While shops do make mistakes they also (which seems to happen much more often) will take advantage of people who seem to not know what they're talking about.  I knew to prevent this from happening to me I would have to educate myself so I would know when they were trying to sell me some crap I didn't need, like an alignment when I knew mine was fine, or "lightbulb fluid",

I typically give shops the benefit of the doubt but once I feel they are trying to screw me over I've lost trust and I can't let someone work on my car that I don't trust. Personally I've never had problems with Hayworth and I've typically known them to do a professional as well as personal job, but depending on how long it has been since this post was made when you read this you may want to use your own caution.  Remember jobs have turnover rates, people get fired and hired, the same friendly face may not be there in 6 years from now or even tomorrow and likewise the same scumbag might have finally found the door.

I would like to say that Hayworth Tire has been known for great service and great prices. I have been in the tire business along time and know that her advise from the Knoxville tire store was unprofessional and sounded like the guy giving the advise did not know his tires or branding. People make mistakes all the time and yes it happens in every profession.
However there was no accident and unless she was driving reckless would not have been. We in the tire and auto repair industry don't care if you are male or female and i am very sorry that that old stigma still remains in the industry. Honestly i am very upset that this post still remains on the site after 10 years.
Please educate yourself with recommended maintenance schedules and vehicle awareness & safety procedures for any future service you may choose. We in the automotive industry try and educate the customer on maintenance schedules and tire choices yet alot of corporate owned  automotive stores demand that the employees sell sell sell or loose their job if they don't hit the numbers.
I recommend you support your local family owned tire stores and stay away from corporate pressure to perform procedures that aren't needed or performed too soon and in the future i would recommend that you call the person or business that you had a issue with and see what corrective actions they are willing to take to keep you a happy customer. That's all any business should want a opportunity to correct the problem. Keep up the good work Bryan !!!!

This comment was sent in over 4 years ago, and a new employee of mind had just found it and brought it to my attention. I have put over 21 yrs of hard work in Kingsport building my business, and a good name. During this time we have provided service to thousands of satified customers. Hayworth Tire has won awards for the "The best tire store" in Kingsport and the Tri-cities for 9 out of 10 year running. These were put on by The March of Times, and Kingsport Times News. Winners are picked by votes sent in from people that live and do business in our area. Now back to the complaint; if we made a mistake and put 3 different size tires on, no matter what! all that would have had to happen was a phone call to correct the problem. This is also something that could be seen just setting in the parking lot, whick makes it even harder for something like this to happen. There is no such thing has a "No Brand" tire, Kelly, Bridgestone, Michelin, ect. all have several lines of private brand tires, and all of their private brand sales equal to, or in some cases out sell their name brand tires. There are over 100 brand of tires on the market, and 8 or 9 major compaines make the bulk of them. Women customers make up over half of our total customers, and we don't take them lightly! I try to show anyone who has a problem, or bad part, what is is and how it affects their vehicle. The main point to this is; that is if a mistake was made a call could have corrected it. I have taken alot of pride in having as few mistakes as possible over the years, and I handle any that have happened myself.

You have my sympathy - but you have to educate yourself

They filed the following rebuttal to the above Rip-Off Report: Their email: [email protected] Their name: bonnie march Their relationship to the company: Consumer Suggestion Rebuttal: You are not getting ripped off because you are a woman. You are getting ripped off because you don't know what you are buying and how to buy it. If what you say is true - this is a terrible story. I am speaking as a woman who has been in the tire/automotive business for years. You have my sympathy - but you have to educate yourself - this could have caused an accident. The lives of you and your daughter could have been at risk - you owe it to her to be able to make wise decisions regarding your vehicle and every other aspect of your life. So I learned - its not that hard -
