I purchased an hp Officejet Pro K550 printer from Office Depot on January 19, 2006. The major reason I purchased the hp over a Canon printer was the rebate offer of $40. I've had problems in the past with hp and their unwillingness to support their products and their rebates but I stupidly decided to give them another chance.

I sent in the rebate form with the required copy of "store-identified receipt", the completed coupon form, and enclosed the original UPC label on January 25, 2006 to the Mesa, AZ address on the coupon. The rebate offer, HSV316, was good for printers purchased between January 15 and 28, 2006. Today I called to report that my rebate check had not been received (it says to allow8-10 weeks for processing).

I first talked with Pam, an hp customer service rep, who told me that I did not qualify for the rebate because it was not purchased directly from HP (even though the form says "store identified receipt" and says "only purchases made by an end user or commercial business from an AUTHORIZED HP RESELLER in the United States and its territories are valid") and that it was Office Depot's mistake for misleading me.

She had my information in the database so they cannot say they did not receive it. I asked to speak to a supervisor--spoke with Curtis. He confirmed that the rebate only covered products purchased directly from HP. This is NOT what the form says. He says I should have checked out the hp website before I purchased this printer expecting a rebate so it is my fault for not being sure that just because the form says I qualified, I should have checked the hp website "just to be sure"! WHAT???

Pam admitted that the form was misleading but Curtis made no such admission. My next step is Office Depot. Since the rebate was sent directly to hp I don't think they have any ability to check it out but they should be aware that hp is ripping off their customers.

I reported this rebate rip-off to the HP Ethics department. They resubmitted the request to the rebate center and guess what? According to the rebate website, they are issuing now issuing a check! It pays to contact HP directly. By the way, I stopped by Office Depot and told them what the HP rebate center was saying about them and they said they had been told the same thing by several other customers. They were reporting all these complaints to Office Depot management. I would say HP has a problem in Meza, AZ. I would purchase from HP again but ONLY if the rebate is instant and not mail-in.
