WHILE IN THE MIDDLE OF RUSHING TO FIND A JOB (I HAD BEEN LAID OFF), AND STAYING WITH MY MOTHER (I HAD NO PRIVACY, SO I HAD TO RUSH THROUGH EVERYTHING), MY HEWLETT PACKARD PRINTER DECIDED TO START PLAYING GAMES WITH ME.
I HAD A BRAND NEW BLACK INK CARTRIDGE, WHICH IS ALL ONE NEEDS FOR A JOB RESUME. BUT MY COLOR INK CARTRIDGE RAN OUT, AND DISABLED MY WHOLE PRINTER. (THIS HAD NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE.)
I CALLED FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE, BUT SINCE MY PRINTER WAS OUT OF WARRANTY, I GOT NO HELP. ALSO, THERE IS NO ONLINE TECHNICAL HELP FOR THIS. SO I WASTED THE AFTERNOON TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS WRONG, AND ALL IT WAS WAS A TRICK BUILT INTO THEIR SYSTEM TO GET YOU TO BUY A NEW COLOR INK CARTRIDGE. (THIS, WHEN I WAS UNEMPLOYED!)
I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER HP PRINTER AND WILL TELL EVERYONE ELSE NOT TO.

I have a brother 3220 C. The reason I say this is if the COlor Ink is low it locks out the Fax, Scanner, the works! PAIN in the butt. I know this may not help you but it may make you feel better it is not just HP.

The printer does not 'know' what you are actually printing- the printer only knows what you ASK it to do. The default is "Print in Color". You must select "Properties...Advanced...Print in Greyscale" when the HP printer window pops up....
