Placing your child in a private school is done with much planning, lots of hope, and confidence your decision is the right one. As with any learning institution, not every environment is the right place for your child. Unfortunately, the individual who complained about the Hillside School had a terrible experience.
On the other hand, we placed our son at Hillside for his 8th and 9th grade years and it was the perfect fit. Our son was taking some time to mature, resulting in some serious uncomfortable situations in the public school. We come from a wealthy town with many over achieving parents and students. The publc schools were a bad fit. We felt lucky to find Hillside.
Having our son attend Hillside, which had a diverse environment, both academically and socially, allowed our son to regain his confidence, develop his learning skills, and use his athletic skills. He returned to the public high school in 10th grade.
I think returning him to the public schools may not have been the best choice, but it is where he wanted to go. However, he went on to successfully graduate, and played basedball and hockey for his High School teams. He played Junior Hockey for two years after high school, since he was not ready for college. After two years of Juniors, he went to college, and graduated with a 3.79, while working almost fulltime. He also worked out to get in tip top shape as he followed college by attending Officer Candidate School (OCS) - Marines - in Quantico Virginia. After OCS, he successfully completed his Marine basic training (The Basic School), became an Infantry officer, and led his platoon through two tours (Afghanistan and Yemen).
I am sorry for the disappointed and unhappy writer who warned people about attending Hillside. And, I am sure they had a bad experience. But, there are thousands of very happy private school parents. Count me as a supporter of the Hillside School.
If your child has the potential to be a successful adult, but needs an alternative learning environment which the public schools cannot offer, consider Hillside, where his skills and personality will have the opportunity to shine.
