We received a notice that our car was included in the Toyota "oil sludge/gel" recall. We immediately called Hoover Toyota, where we bought the car. They said to bring it in the next day, February 21, 2007.

We carried the car in and were told it would cost around $100 to inspect the car for the oil gel IF we didn't have the problem.

If we did, it would take up to a week for the engine to be rebuilt. No, it's not a fix-just a replacement. The problem lies in the tilt of the engine and that won't change. You just get a rebuilt motor to use until it happens again. Then, it's your problem.

We received a call later that day saying we did have the gel. We asked what we would do for a vehicle for a whole week with two people working in jobs 15 miles apart and 20 miles from home. The response was, "Toyota is leaning over backward for you and you want more?" I said I didn't mess the car up. "Yeah, but did you buy the car new?" I said, "I don't buy new cars." Then, "What was the mileage on it when you bought it?" My response: "I don't know. Look it up. We bought it from your dealership."

Eventually, we were offered a loaner for three days. Three days because "we allow ourselves a little time in case there is a problem. It should be ready to go within three days."

We were told brake work needed to be done as well. We said, "Absolutely not! You are to do nothing to this car that isn't covered by this recall."

Today is March 9, 2007. We've been juggling times and office hours to try to get two people to two different places for work. We finally got a call that the car is ready. And, a bill for $311. What is it for? "Oh, you know. Belts and such."

We said, "No Way. You were told to do only what is covered by the recall. Not a penny."

We don't pay the $311, we don't get our car. After almost 2 months.

A call to the Toyota Corporation got a sympathetic ear. A man said he couldn't believe the dealership would act like that and they would authorize us to get a rental car for $35 a day, if we paid up front. They'd reimburse us about a month after we turned the car back in. If I could afford to drive rental cars, I wouldn't have this freakin' lemon.

Research during this fiasco has revealed that Toyota and its dealers were aware of this problem as early as 2002-long before I bought the car. No one mentions it. How is that legal?

We are being charged for parts used in the scope of the recall, but "not covered." How is that legal?

We specifically told them not to do one thing not covered by the recall. We have a bill of $311. How is that legal?

So, we go tomorrow and pay $311. as soon as we make an appointment with a lawyer we haven't yet met. What are the chances this guy isn't going to screw us as adeptly as did the dealership?

so you pay for them. Mobil-1 will keep you from having any more sludge issues. And why NOT buy a Toyota new? I bought my 1991 new and ran it for 323,000 miles until Jan 19 '07. That '91 DX cost me $13,000 fully equipped. I had $800 in repairs. That all totals to $13,800 or $825/year or 4.3 cents per mile. I just traded that '91 for $2000 against a new '07 LE V6 with VSC. How are you doing per mile and per year with your used cars? 'Used' is not the best buy when you buy a slow-depreciating car like a Toyota. They do not lose value fast enough to compensate you for all of the unknowns that come with ANY used car. The previous owner ALWAYS gets rid of their used car for a reason. Usually it is a bad reason (for you).
