This company, smartsavingscenter.com, employs a website which in our case was tied to a second website called hotmoviesale.com where we tried to order a DVD. Shortly after the order was placed we received an e-mail indicating the DVD was placed on backorder. Since it was a holiday gift we immediately canceled and reordered on a different site.
Turns out this first site, together with hotmoviesale.com, automatically enroll you in a monthly savings program. This enrollment is buried in what appears to be standard legal jargon and specified a monthly fee of $19.95 plus a handling fee of $1.00. Since this was unnoticed by us we thought no more of the transactions.
Following that, they have been charging our account for the past 4 months in the amount of $29.95 and $1.00. I called to inquire why and they indicated it was our fault because of inattention to their fine print. They have closed our account and agreed to refund $29.95 for one of the months.
I discussed this with someone at my credit card company and was told to file a dispute both to try to resolve the issue or at a minimum, preclude any further charges from this company to my account. This outlandish company has charged us a total of $123.00 for a DVD they did not even have in stock. We have received nothing from either of these two companies except a monthly bill.
They have ignored all subsequent emails and requests from us for a full refund.
