My experience is similar to others.  Unfortunately I did not look up the company until after they were here.

They hooked up a large box blower to one vent, sucking out air.  All the time, your front door is wide open.

Two guys come in with shop vacs and the regular hoses on the shop vac, only the hoses are 3-4 feet long.  They stick them in each duct and move the hose around.  Before you can see that they are going to do a poor job, the lead man takes you down to your furnace and tries to get you to agree to furnace cleaning and taking out the blower motor and vacuuming it for $175.  I was working at home so I couldn't tell what they were doing until it was too late.

By the time you see what they are almost done with the job.  I asked about using brushes and was assured that their machine would suck all the dust out without contact.  I was told that this is how it is usually done. The EPA has a pamphlet on duct cleaning and yes, brushes are required!  http://www.epa.gov/iaq/pdfs/airducts.pdf

In the end, I was asked to sign a contract (on the back of the invoice).  I refused to do so.  This was such a bad job of faking it that I was almost embarrassed to watch it.

These people cannot perform the job with the equipment that they have (even if they wanted to).  Stay away.  Stay far away.

#2Consumer Suggestion

While I agree with you about the shopvacs, I wonder how much you paid to have the "duct cleaning".  My guess is like most home owners you called as many companies you could took the lowest price and hired them.  I have been in the HVAC industry for 12 years and have seen this time after time.  Getting multiple estimates is always a good idea, however the best way to go about it is getting info about company first.  Being in the homeowners shoes i suggest getting 5 estimates, throw out the lowest estimate and the highest.  The remaining 3 I suggest researching.  Most guys in the middle are fair, hardworking companies.  In WI where I am from duct cleaning should cost about $450.00, larger homes price goes up about $15.00/opening(either return or supply)
