Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
Jasmin Putnam is teaching Suzuki violin lessons in Irvine, California, using Suzuki Violin Books one through Book ten, to unsuspecting students, charging top dollar, and she is NOT PROPERLY CERTIFIED by the SAA (Suzuki Association of America) to teach the other SUZUKI VIOLIN books. Jasmin Putnam is ONLY certified to teach Suzuki Violin Book one and Suzuki Violin Book six. That is correct! Jasmin Putnam only has certification in two Suzuki books and THAT IS IT!

Jasmin Putnam does not have proper credentials for Suzuki Books two, nor Book three, nor Book four, nor Book five, nor Book seven, nor Book eight, nor Book nine, nor Book ten. Please check out the SAA website for yourself.

Shocking, isn't it?

Check this information out for yourself at:

http://suzukiassociation.org/parents/teacherloc/

Jasmin Putnam will not admit this upfront to any of her students and is therefore capitalizing on the Suzuki name.

Jasmin Putnam PORTRAYS herself as qualified/certified to teach all ten of the Suzuki violin books and this is wrong.

Why doesn't Jasmin Putnam take her time to go to the Suzuki workshops/learning centers and get properly certified and better herself so that she can then become an accountable and responsible violin teacher to her students?

She is too busy going to various unsuspecting Montessouri schools in Irvine to try to hitch more unsuspecting prospective students/parents interested in getting their child a 'Suzuki Violin Education.'

She is too busy holding once/month violin group lessons for all of these unsuspecting 'Suzuki students' of hers at University Synagague in Irvine, for which they do not care about the integrity of an organization but only getting the rent money from Jasmin Putnam.

It looks like it is purely all about the buck here.

Violin teachers behaving like this, with a focus on making a buck and not being accountable and responsible , are doing a disservice and discredit to DR. Suzuki, his philosophy and to the entire Suzuki associations and all of it's dedicated students. And, to these students parents who are paying top dollar for inferior violin education such as this type.

Buyer Beware!

Violin students and their parents....Beware!

Know what you are actually paying for.

If you see advanced students from Jasmin PUtnam, know that these special students have gone on to more qualified, advanced teachers with credentials and higher education. Jasmin PUtnam likes to take full credit for a few of these students and will not tell you this. She will only tell you that 'she is so proud of her students that went on.'

If you truly want QUALITY Suzuki Violin lessons, search and ask the teacher upfront about their schooling and credentials first.

Make certain that your Suzuki teacher has been certified by the SAA.

Just because a teacher will pull out a Suzuki book and begin to teach from it does not mean that they are qualified or certified to do so!

Even if they show you a picture of themselves with Dr. Suzuki.

That means nothing but it 'looks good' for business.

There are teachers that conduct themselves in this fashion are shameless!

Again...

Buyer Beware!

Violin students and parents......Beware!

Anyone that can play out of the Suzuki books can go ahead and 'teach Suzuki violin', rip off the public, and call themselves 'Suzuki Violin teachers'.

If you are going to put out hard-earned money for your child's violin lessons, make certain that your teacher has the proper credentials and is certified.

Also, Jasmin Putnam has apparently taught her husband, Tim Putnam, how to play the pieces in Suzuki Book one, Book two, and Book three.

So, Tim Putnam states that he is 'qualified/certified, as he states, to teach only the first three books of Suzuki violin and then passes his advanced students onto Jasmin PUtnam, who then charges more money and she is not even properly certified.

These people are very good at 'talking the Suzuki talk' but are not being upfront about their 'credentials.'

What a huge rip off to the community and a disservice to us all.

The Suzuki ASsociation is investigating this matter.

Also, a parent discovered an interesting fact about Jasmin PUtnam:

Jasmin PUtnam is apparently the 'vice president of the Irvine Conservatory of Music', a non-profit organization.

Funny thing that Jasmin Putnam makes absolutely no mention of this to any of her students.

Check it out for yourself:

People in the Irvine Community and of Orange County who are dedicated to having their child learn the violin DESERVE to know the truth and what Jasmin and Tim Putnam DO NOT want to share with you........their lack of proper Suzuki training and credentials!

Parents......don't be afraid to ask or talk to your Suzuiki violin teacher about whether they have proper training or proper credentials or not.

It is your hard-earned money and most importantly, your precious child's music education.

The writer of the very angry piece against Jasmin Putnam must have something very personal against this lady.  This writer's report is from 2008.  Jasmin plays extremely well, has played in many orchestras and theater productions over the years, and her teaching methods are comparable to many other Suzuki-trained teachers I have run across over the years.  Certified in Book 1 and then Book 6.  Hmmmm.  Since the books become progressively difficult, it stands to reason she could handle Books 2-5, too.

I am a thirty-year piano teaching veteran. What is it that alerted this parent to check out the credentials of these teachers? She should have done so at the beginning! There are many areas that a person can demonstrate or provide a portfolio of accomplishments. I have this to say about the Suzuki method: I have taken three of the Institutes, studied privately in the method and this was AFTER earning a degree in music. No one should be teaching if they cannot play through book ten and then some! It's not a matter of certification from the SSA; it's a matter of mastery of a teacher's instrument. I could not imagine giving my money to anyone who wasn't a proven master teacher and performer. What college instruction does the teacher have? Is the teacher an active performer? What other credentials does the teacher have? Has the violin teacher played with any ensembles? I never met a violinist in my life who did not play with a group of some sort. The Suzuki books contain some very good music in them, therefore, some people do buy the books for the literature. Yes, a person should be able to explain their training if they advertise the method. More to the point, though, Suzuki training accepts individuals without degrees, or even low playing ability. I have no problem with this since I learned so much in my Institutes. If the teacher is a university student, that's fine. I wouldn't hesitate, however, to get a recommendation from their teacher, or attend a recital in which they perform. Also, these days, many famous and virtuoso (unknown and known) performers were taught by the Suzuki method. I think that having studied the method, in it's true sense, qualifies one to use Suzuki's method. Let me reiterate that I have stuck with teaching this method after the first three levels (I was already a good teacher and it all clicked with me) I know other very successful teachers who did not take all the levels. Any experienced musician will not need this level of training, IMO. I could play past all the books when I took the extra pedagogical training offered by the wonderful Suzuki Institutes. I am an accomplished musician first of all. I am certainly one of the best Suzuki teachers in my region, thanks to lots of studying and practice. I just didn't need all the levels. Do you see what I mean? In my mind, Suzuki training is a excellent pedagogical supplement to any already developed musician. So, proof of taking the training should be provided, however, taking book Three and only being able to PLAY book Three are two entirely different things. Again, just my opinion. Lastly, I am a little suspicious as to the anger of this woman complaining. As a long time instructor, I have had many an angry mother or frustrated father blow up at me for no or little reason. Tempers run high for many people as we even now have the term "parent rage" (Seriously--Google it!) For this reason I accept few students anymore. A real musician does not have to put up with angry parents when they have alternative ways to earn a living. I do have many positive written testimonials, BTW. So, in closing, get credentials or get the story. NEVER take lessons from someone who cannot demonstrate proficiency at the instrument. An older musician may not play any more, but will most likely have a degree or equivalency. I don't know a single good teacher who can't prove, in some way or another, that they are indeed qualified. Don't be shy: a good or promising musician will happily share with you their experience! When you find that good teacher, PLEASE, treat them well. The gift they share is priceless, and they deserve to be treated with respect and dignity at all times. If you want more information please go to the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) or you state music educators web site. While I don't think a complete degree is necessary, (there are lots of ways to learn to play), these organizations have an ethics statement on the front page. This is all my opinion, but from an authoritative source. I hope it helps.
