What if the person I co-signed for files bankrupcy? does that clear me of this obligation as co- signer??

i hate to say this, but you may have to go after your friend to help you pay that debt. It's a nasty shame, for sure, but the same happened to someone I knew. she co-signed on a car loan and the guy skipped, leaving her to hold the bag. She ended up going after him in court. She won, eventually, and he had to pay everything. The lawyer cost her like 2,000 (which he had to pay when she won,) She looked at this way: It might cost 2,000, but that's better than 22,000 and a car i don't want. Don't kick yourself too hard, there's plenty of people out there that will do that for you. Just learn from it. I wish you all the luck.

It's too bad that she has defaulted on the loan. And no, there is not much you can do. You signed on the line. You are as responsible as the other signer.
