My name is Carlos Ottley. I feel like a jackass, I've been the victim of Advanced Moving systems Inc. I contacted them by phone originally and through the internet, after failling to show up on the promised day I went ahead and still decided to do business with them, cause they where cheap.

Well, they finally showed up a day and a half later 07-22-02, after loading up my truck they told me that i was carrying more than was estimated and therefore my bill would have to be increased from 2,212.50 to 5,957.75.

Wow I thought why is it so high sure I had extra stuff but that much....well I found out that they had increased what they where going to charge me from 2.50 to 3.50 per cubic feet. Outrageous I thought, all the while I was dealing with them over the phone from Florida. Since my wife was in N.Y.

The driver Ron said don't worry they'll fix it once you call them monday, well they never did nor intend to do so. I've called on several occasions and sent e-mails but they do not answer either of those I've been talking with Tommy (dispatcher supervisor) and Joe sales agent.

They don't seem to care all of a sudden. What a scam I need help ASAP I've already made arrangements to move my family to Florida and I've got nothing at home. I just called TOmmy today 07-26-02 and he told me "we will deliver next week" no date n o time just next week, after they had promised the delivery for today. Please help me. I'm desperate.

Carlos,

I'm sorry this happened to you. Advanced Moving Systems is notorious in the industry for scamming consumers. You should know that it is illegal in Florida for a moving company to hold someone's belongings hostage for more money. Please contact the local police and the Florida Attorney General.

Also, complaints against these scam moving companies are starting to make a difference. Seven of them were recently fined by the DOT, including Advanced Moving Systems. (see

Please take the time to make these complaints. Household goods carriers who fail or refuse to comply with any commercial regulation relating to protection of individual shippers are subject to a civil penalty of an amount not less than $1000 for each violation and for each day the violation occurs.

Consumers may file household goods or other commercial motor carrier complaints on FMCSA's nationwide complaint hotline at 1-888-368-7238 (1-888 DOT-SAFT).
