Actually, the reason they cut your hours back rather than fire you is because this way they can avoid having to pay any unemployment costs for you. Restaurant employees have virtually no protection from unjust termination, and no recourse when it happens, unless you have a contract, which over 99% of restaurant employees do not. Here's what they did with you: they probably would have liked to just fire you, but didn't want to have to keep paying out money for you. As long as you are still on the payroll they can schedule you very little and you won't be able to claim any benefits. The idea is that you will end up quitting because you're not making any money, which eliminates their liability per your unemployment. I've got a post under a report about "Skyline Chili" that explains the rules in more depth and discusses what people can do to change this situation. Best of luck to you! P.S. If anyone out there has any advice as to recourses for unjustly terminated at-will employees, or employees like those in Sarah's situation, please let us know.

The e-mail address I provided before is incorrect. The correct e-mail address is frederickcounty.com/dining/haganstavern.htm You can also type hagan's tavern into your search engine and the link should pop up. Thank you for your support by not giving your business to John Hagan's Tavern
