I am in my last 2 weeks of college at Kaplan U and all of a sudden I get a bill for 700 bucks and it has to be paid before they will release my degree to me. Back In Feb 2010 , KU had a tuition rate increase that I was just notified of this morning (10:30 CST June 10th, 2010) They had 4 months to notify me that I would owe them additional money due to the rate increase. They have threatened me, with blocking me from finishing my last two weeks before I officially graduate. Unfortunately I have an income of 800 bucks per month and I am asked to pay 700 in two weeks...what a bunch of ridiculous bull!!!!!! They had 4 months to notify me and 2 terms ago, that I would owe them money..they do play games here at Kaplan U..I wouldn't recommend Kaplan U to anyone that wants a degree...there finance dept is a mess and they are rip off artists. $20,000 in debt and no degree because someone has their heads up their four point contact!!!!!!!!!!!
I am so pissed, I may contact the US dept of Education and bring down the storm of the century!!!!!!!!!!!

I would seriously question their policy of returning unused loan money to the student who intends to stay enrolled. In all the colleges I've worked for, students could retain that credit and use it towards the next semester. Ask for an accounting of charges and credits and go over it with a fine tooth comb. It's your only defense.

Hi,
You're not the only one going through this. I received two check the end of March 2010. One in the amount of $2300 and the other in the amount of $904.79. At the time I didn't have a balance owed. But two weeks later I get a phone call saying I owe $904.79. Hmmm, how convenient. So I questioned it and was told that this was a balance owed from 2008! I was told I could cash the checks and spend them how I pleased but first to check if I have a balance, if I don't, then I need not send the money back. If I do, I pay the balance out of the checks and keep what is left over since it is illegal for KU NOT to send this money to us. So when you receive a check in the future check to see if you have a balance. I had to get a lawyer over this. I went from owing $904.79 to $5140.01 to now owing $7873.01! They refunded back to my student loans $13816.36! But yet I owe them $7873.01? I don't think so. I think they have a bunch of idiots working in the financial aid department and when asked for a paper trail, they cannot provide one. I seriously think we need to let this go across the media across the nation and shut them down completely.
