KLMN Readers Services Door to Door Magazine Sales Scam Chesapeake, Virginia
I fell for the same scam that many others are reporting here. A very nice couple of younger adults knocked on my door and began a convincing salespitch about being from the inner city and having a tough life, but they are now trying to learn how to be productive members of society by selling magazines door to door. They tugged on my hearstrings and so I said I would buy a magazine subscription, which they quickly convinced me how much more I would be helping them if I would buy two subscriptions. First, the list of magazines they present have numbers next to each magazine which make you assume the number represents the price -- which it doesn't, the actual price is much more. Those numbers represent the "points" the salesperson receives for their sales. The actual cost of the magazines are listed on a separate form which they don't show you until later when they have their hooks in you pretty deep. Next, it's not until you are already writing your check that they inform you that each subscription has an additional $10 Non-Refundale process & handling charge. Ok, fair enough what's an extra $10 to help out a kid who is trying to get his life straightened out right? So when all is said and done, you have just way over paid for some magazines you may never read, but you close your door having a warm feeling that you truly helped out another human being -- right. The problem is that the magazines never show up and your money is gone. The phone number listed is never answered, and no calls or emails are returned. This company has an "F" rating with the BBB I later found out. So if you get a knock on your door from these people don't fall for their scam. Unfortunately, I will now never buy anything from a door-to-door person even if they are legitimate.
